The Szybka Kolej Miejska w Warszawie , SKM Warszawa for short (German literally Stadtschnellbahn in Warsaw ) is a S-Bahn -like system with four lines in the greater area of the Polish capital Warsaw .

operator

All lines (S1, S2, S3 and S9) are operated by the company of the same name Szybka Kolej Miejska Sp.oo Warszawa ( Stadtschnellbahn GmbH Warsaw ). Line S9 was operated by Koleje Mazowieckie until the end of 2011 .

history

After the construction of the Warsaw Central Tunnel with the Warszawa Centralna station , city traffic with electric multiple units was started as early as 1937, coming close to the S-Bahn in Berlin and Hamburg. When it was restored after the Second World War, the central tunnel was expanded, but an attractive inner-city transport offer did not materialize. A subway was built, but it did not start operating until 1995 (cf. Warsaw Metro ). The Polish production of S-Bahn trains went to Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście (Tricity City Express).

It was only in 2002 that the decision was made to set up a rapid transit network in Warsaw. Trial operation began on October 3, 2005 between Warsaw West Railway Station ( Warszawa Zachodnia ) and Warszawa Falenica station in the extreme southeast of the city and ended on July 1, 2006 due to a shortage of passengers. On the same day, operations between Sulejówek (an eastern suburb of Warsaw) and Pruszków, southwest of Warsaw, have continued to this day. This line is numbered S2 . It runs about every half hour without an exact 30-minute cycle.

On 15 March 2010, the operation of the second line from Gdansk Station (started Warszawa Gdańska ) to the north across the border capital addition by the municipality Jabłonna in the city Legionowo leads where they at the station Legionowo Piaski ends. The line is numbered S9 .

The third line went into operation on September 1, 2010, with the number S1 . Initially along its entire length east of the Vistula, it connects the Ostbahnhof ( Warszawa Wschodnia ) with the Otwock station in the city of the same name, southeast of Warsaw. On December 15, 2010 it was extended to the Westbahnhof ( Warszawa Zachodnia ), from June 2011 the train is to run to Pruszków, with which it will then serve all stations west of the Vistula that are also served by the S2.

The connection to Chopin Airport was completed on June 1, 2012 . For this, the S2 was extended to the airport and a new line S3 established, via the Warsaw West station and either the station Warsaw center (as S3S) or the Warsaw central station via the remote railway tracks of the diameter line (as S3C) to the breakpoint Legionowo Piaski leads.
