The SKM series 19WE is an electric multiple unit operated by Szybka Kolej Miejska (SKM) in Warsaw . It was manufactured by Newag from 2008 to 2010 .

The Szybka Kolej Miejska, the S-Bahn of the city of Warsaw, opened its first line in 2006, on which it used multiple units of the SKM series 14WE converted from the PKP series EN57 . The renovation was carried out by Newag, a Polish company that emerged from a former repair shop of the Polskie Koleje Państwowe state railway . For the start of operation of a second line, which was planned for 2010, additional vehicles were required, so that Newag was awarded the contract to build four new, four-part multiple units. For Newag it was the first in-house construction of an electric multiple unit, so that a prototype was produced before the delivery of the series vehicles, which was called the Newag 20WE . This prototype had two powered end cars and four intermediate cars. It was used for test and approval drives and was painted in neutral gray. After approval was granted, the multiple unit was disbanded and the cars were placed in series production trains.

The 19WE series is a pure high-floor vehicle. Since SKM only ordered low-floor vehicles for the further expansion of its network, production of the 19WE series did not exceed four trains. Instead, Newag received the order to build a new low-floor multiple unit, which as Newag Impuls was delivered in large numbers to various voivodships .

Technology and equipment

A 19WE series train consists of four cars, which drive the two end cars. Each end car has two powered bogies for this purpose; each wheel set is driven by its own drive motor. The car body is self-supporting. The 19WE is operated with the standard voltage of 3 kV direct current in Poland and can withstand voltage fluctuations from 2.4 kV to 4.2 kV. The gearboxes have ratios of 1: 5.18, weigh 680 kg and require 8 liters of gear oil. Parts of the braking system were supplied by Knorr-Bremse . The 19WE series is designed for operation at ambient temperatures from −30 ° C to +40 ° C.

A four-part multiple unit has 182 seats. The number of standing places is put at 520 for 5 people per square meter. As part of the approval, operational safety was demonstrated with 10 people per square meter and thus 1040 standing places. There are 10 doors on each side of the train. The passenger information system consists of LED displays above the driver's cab, on the sides of the vehicle and in the interior.

Each driver's cab has a seat for the driver and two auxiliary seats. The seats are partly face to face , partly across the direction of travel along the walls. Since the floor height is 1,160 mm above the platform edge, there are extendable ramps for wheelchair users at the end cars, where the multi-purpose compartments are located. These doors have an additional button with the pictogram of a wheelchair user, after which the door concerned can no longer be closed via the door control , but only via an additional button from the driver.
