The EN57 series is a series of three-part electric railcars originally operated by the Polish State Railways (PKP). Since local transport was separated from these, they have been modernized in some cases considerably for the respective successor company, mainly Przewozy Regionalne .
The EN57 series is used in local transport.
EN57 are also in use on the Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście S-Bahn lines in the vicinity of Gdańsk (Danzig).
construction
The EN57 multiple units consist of a fixed configuration of three vehicle parts: two control cars (manufacturer's designation 5B) and one railcar (manufacturer's designation 6A) in between. Scharfenberg couplings at the ends enable several multiple units to be coupled together.
inner space
In each car there are three compartments with a passage between the rows of seats. They are separated by two entry rooms with sliding doors. The control cars each have a toilet, while the railcar has a switch cabinet. However, the front parts of the control cars are set up differently; There is an additional manually operated double door on both sides, which leads to a larger compartment with foldable seats and from which one enters the control cabin. These multi-purpose compartments are used as service rooms, luggage or bicycle compartments, etc. In the modernized EN57-2000 multiple units, the multi-purpose rooms at the end of the train are connected to the boarding areas, with lifts for the disabled at the entrance doors.
Construction series
Up to number 601, the trains had 1st and 2nd class seats, after that only 2nd class. Up to number 1113, the car bodies were built with corrugated side walls, then with smooth side walls. The front of the trains up to No. 1825 have three front windows, from No. 1900 to 1953 new fronts with two windows were installed, which correspond to the EW58 series. Numerous different color schemes have been applied over the years.
Conversions
With the help of EU funding, the PKP has carried out a redesign program with which the EN57 is renewed and equipped with matrix train destination displays, with the plastic seats being replaced by modern seats. In some cases, the front of the railcars will be replaced and air conditioning will be installed.
Six EN57 were converted into class 14WE railcars for the Szybka Kolej Miejska w Warszawie (Warsaw S-Bahn) , with the entire structure being replaced.
Four-part variant: EN71
In 1976, 20 four-part multiple units were built and designated as EN71 . From 1976 to 2003, another 30 EN71 were created by converting EN57.
Foreign assignment
The EN57 was also exported to and used by the Yugoslav Railways, with the HZ as the HŽ series 6011/4011 and SZ as the SŽ series 315 .
