Thello SAS , based in Paris, is a French rail company owned by Trenitalia . It is the first company to compete in long-distance passenger transport with SNCF after the international long-distance transport market was liberalized in France from 2009. Thello currently operates express trains both day and night between France and Italy.

history

First Thello train in Paris Gare de Lyon on December 11, 2011.

Thello is a French simplified stock corporation (“ Société par actions simplifiée ”). It was founded after the collaboration between SNCF and Trenitalia, which previously operated Artesia trains between Paris and Italy together, had ended. Initially two thirds of the shares were held by Trenitalia and one third by Veolia Transdev .

Thello's night trains have been running daily on the route between Paris - Gare de Lyon and Venice - Santa Lucia since December 11, 2011 with stops in Dijon- Ville, Milan - Central Station , Brescia , Verona , Vicenza and Padua and Venice- Mestre . Cabotage , the transport of national passengers on a section of the international journey, has so far not been permitted by the Autorité de régulation des activités ferroviaires (ARAF), the authority that regulates free competition on the French rail network; Thello therefore does not offer Paris – Dijon / Dijon – Paris tickets.

On December 9, 2012, Thello added a second night connection between France and Italy with Paris-Gare de Lyon- Rome - Termini with stops in Dijon, Bologna and Florence in its offer. In 2012, Thello achieved sales of 30 million euros.

In October 2013 Thello announced the discontinuation of the Paris – Rome connection for December 2013 after only one year of operation. The reason given was, in particular, difficulties in obtaining timetable routes that enable attractive travel times. At the same time, Thello confirmed his wish to offer day train connections between Marseille and Milan from 2014 with stops in Genoa and Nice . In a decision of 9 July 2013, the ARAF had confirmed that the planned connection was compatible with the rules applicable in France for competitive international rail transport offers and that it was not in competition with the TER , which is subsidized by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region with tax revenues - Represent regional trains. Since December 14, 2014, Thello has been offering a train pair between Marseille and Milan as a daily connection, which has been increased by two more train pairs in the section between Nice and Milan since April 12, 2015.

Since the beginning of 2013, the company has had the safety certificate required for traffic on the Belgian rail network. Thello had announced that from 2014 it would compete directly with Thalys on the Paris-Brussels connection. To date, however, these plans have not materialized.

On September 6, 2016, Trenitalia announced that it had taken over the share from Transdev and has therefore been managing the company alone since then.
