The Akiem SAS , based in Saint-Ouen near Paris is a French leasing company for locomotives. The company is one of the leading rental companies of locomotives in the continental European rail market. Akiem owns a total of 460 locomotives (as of 2019) and has offices in Düsseldorf, Warsaw and Budapest. Customers are state and private railway companies in the industrial and transport sector in France, Belgium, Italy and Germany. The shareholders are each 50% of the French railway company SNCF and a fund from DWS .
background
The company was founded in December 2008 by the freight division of SNCF under the name Société de gestion et valorisation de matériel de traction with the aim of taking over surplus locomotives from SNCF and then leasing them (leasing mainly to the SNCF itself and to its Subsidiaries, but also to competitors). The investment budget for the first five years (including acquisition costs for the original 253 locomotives, which were taken over by SNCF for € 438 million) should be up to € 1,030 million, according to information.
In February 2016, SNCF sold a 50% stake in Eurotraction, an infrastructure fund managed by DWS / Deutsche Bank , for a value of EUR 700 million. In February 2020 Akiem acquired a European leasing portfolio with 137 locomotives as well as railcars and wagons managed by the Australian financial group Macquarie .
