Ivan Slesyuk

Iwan Slesjuk ( Polish: Iwan Słeziuk , Ukrainian Іва́н Слезю́к ; born January 14, 1896 in Schywatschiw , Austria-Hungary (now Ukraine ); † December 2, 1973 in Ivano-Frankivsk ) was bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of Ivano-Frankivsk in former Galicia . He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2001 .

Life

Ivan Slesjuk was a seminarian at the seminary of archeparchy Stanisławów and was 1923 by Hryhorij Chomyschyn , the Bishop of Stanisławów, for priests ordained. Between 1923 and 1935 Slesjuk worked as a catechist in the grammar school and the seminary in Stanisławów. In April 1945, before Hryhorij Khomyschyn was arrested, he appointed him coadjutor bishop and consecrated him "secret bishop". On January 17, 1947, he succeeded him in office. On November 30, 1968 , he consecrated Sofron Dmyterko as a "secret bishop" who would later become his successor.

Martyrdom and Beatification

In June 1945, Bishop Slesjuk was arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison. He was released on November 15, 1954 and worked underground as a pastor and teacher . In 1957 he assumed responsibility for the diocese as a secret bishop and was arrested again on October 22, 1962. The allegation was anti-state religious activities and was punished with five years imprisonment in Ivano-Frankivsk prison , the former Stanislav. After his release he lived in Ivano-Frankivsk from 1968 and devoted himself to the training of priests underground. He was summoned several times by the police authorities there . A sudden attack of weakness led to her death on December 2, 1973. On February 26, 1992, Ivan Slesjuk was officially rehabilitated by the Ivano-Frankivsk District Court for the second term from 1962 to 1967 . Bishop Slesjuk was on 27 June 2001, together with twenty-four other venerable servants and handmaidens of God , the martyrs publicly named and blessed the Greek Catholic Church of the Ukrainians.
