Hryhoriy Khomyshyn
Hryhorij Khomyschyn ( Ukrainian Григорій Хомишин , Polish Grzegorz Chomyszyn ; born March 25, 1867 in Hadynkiwzi , Austria-Hungary , today Ukraine ; † January 17, 1947 in Kiev ) was bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of the Stanisławów Archeparchy and was appointed on 27. Proclaimed Martyr and Blessed by Pope John Paul II on June 6th 2001 .
Life
Hryhorij Khomyschyn was the son of Greek parents and was ordained a priest on November 18, 1893 . His graduate studies in theology he graduated from 1894 to 1899 at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna and in 1902 the rector of the seminary of archeparchy Lviv appointed.
On May 6, 1904, he was appointed bishop of Stanislau, today's Archeparchy Ivano-Frankivsk , and consecrated bishop on June 19, 1904. Its consecrator was Archbishop Andrej Scheptyzkyj OSBM (Ukrainian Archeparchy Lemberg). Archbishop Józef Bilczewski (Archdiocese of Lemberg), Archbishop Józef Teofil Teodorowicz (Armenian Archepark Lemberg ) and Bishop Konstantyn Czechowicz (Ruthenian Eparchy Przemysl ) assisted as co-consecrators .
Consecration
- He donated Symeon Lukatsch the ordination and consecrated him as "secret bishop".
- As the main consecrator he consecrated the following bishops: Mykolaj Tscharnezkyj CSsR , Grygory Balahurak OSBM (auxiliary bishop in Stanislau), Iwan Slesjuk ( coadjutor bishop of Stanislau) and Stefan Waprowytsch (bishop).
- He assisted as co-consecrator with: Soter Stephen Ortynsky de Labetz OSBM ( Apostolic Exarch of the United States ), Nicetas Budka ( Apostolic Exarch of Canada ) and Giovanni Latyševskyj (Auxiliary Bishop in Stanislau).
Martyrdom and Beatification
On the occasion of his pastoral letters and the advocacy of the unity of the Eastern Catholic Churches , he was persecuted after the Soviet occupation of Ukraine . He fled to Vienna in 1914 and returned two years later. In his diocese he introduced the Gregorian calendar , he appointed the Byzantine rite according to the Greek Catholic Church in his diocese as valid and in 1921 introduced celibacy for the priests. Politically, he polarized with the “Ukrainian Catholic People's Party”, which he heads and which achieved high election results in his diocese. Bishop Chomyschyn was 1939 by the secret police of the USSR , the NKVD , arrested, tortured and interrogated. In 1945 he was deported to the Lukjanivska prison in Kiev , where he died on January 17, 1947 as a result of the torture and suffering. He was declared a martyr and blessed by Pope John Paul II on June 27, 2001, along with twenty-four other venerable servants of God .
