Live and act

Sanaç grew up in Turkey , where he attended an İmam Hatip school in Elazığ from 1967 to 1971 . Subsequently, he completed an apprenticeship at the commercial high school in Elazığ, as well as a degree at the University of Economics in Ankara . After several years as an employee of the Tourism Office in Elazig, where he was also trade unionists, he began in 1979 to study at the School of Economics in Cologne . In 1982 he finally came to Austria to study at the Federal Pedagogical Academy in Vienna . He then worked as an Islamic religion teacher in public schools in Vienna and Lower Austria . At the same time he pursued doctoral studies in Turkish , Arabic , philosophy and south-east research at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1992 as Dr. phil. with excellent success.

From 2005 Sanaç was responsible for AHS - BMHS as a specialist inspector for Islamic religious instruction in Burgenland and Lower Austria and for all types of schools in Vorarlberg . From October 2007 he was a lecturer in Islamic history on the private course for teaching at compulsory schools (IRPA), which he also led on an interim basis in summer 2009.

In 2011, Fuat Sanaç was elected to succeed Anas Shakfeh as President of the Islamic Faith Community. Since then he has also been chairman of the Supreme Council and deputy chairman of the Islamic Religious Community in Vienna.

In June 2016, Sanaç announced that he would no longer be available for a term of office. Ibrahim Olgun was elected as his successor .

Modernization of the Islamic Faith Community

Fuat Sanaç is seen as a representative of a more liberal orientation in Islam. He tries to modernize the IGGiÖ, to increase the participation of women in the organization and to achieve a more positive image of Islam in Austrian society. For this reason, he also supports efforts by the Austrian Federal Government such as the Dialog Forum Islam, which he started in 2012 in cooperation with State Secretary for Integration Sebastian Kurz . One of the goals of this initiative is the training of imams in Austria instead of the influx of imams trained abroad.

Response to study on Islamic kindergartens

The study of Islamic kindergartens in Vienna carried out by Ednan Aslan was heavily criticized by Sanaç. Aslan examined the associations that are responsible for about a fifth of Vienna's Islamic kindergartens (about 150) and groups (about 450) with a total of about 10,000 children. Aslan sees a tendency for some of the children to distance themselves from people of other faiths. Sanaç saw Aslan's assessment as a “hate speech” and considers the separate consideration of kindergartens of a certain religion to be “undemocratic and inhuman”. He points out that all kindergartens are checked by the City of Vienna anyway. Aslan's claim that some kindergarten operators have a Salafist background, he finds "ridiculous". Mouhanad Khorchide, on the other hand, believes "that around 20 percent of Muslims tend to isolate themselves", and that many Muslim representatives in Austria quickly fall into the role of victims when they receive critical information, defend Islam in Austria as a whole and cover up problems.

Private

Sanaç has been married since 1977 and has four children.
