Mouhanad Khorchide ( Arabic مُهَنَّد خُورْشِيد Muhannad Churschid , DMG Muhannad Ḫūršīd , born September 6, 1971 in Beirut ) is an Austrian sociologist , Islamic scholar and religious educator . He is Professor of Islamic Religious Education at the Center for Religious Studies (CRS) and Head of the Center for Islamic Theology (ZIT) at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster.

Life

Khorchide's grandparents had fled Palestine to Lebanon , and from there his parents moved on to Saudi Arabia , where Mouhanad Khorchide went to school. As a foreigner, he and his siblings were not allowed to study there and learned German so that they could study in Germany later. But as stateless people , they did not receive a visa and then opted for Austria.

Mouhanad Khorchide came to Vienna in 1989 at the age of 18 , studied sociology and became an Austrian citizen after four years . In addition to his undergraduate studies, he began distance learning. He flew regularly for a few weeks to Beirut for a few years, where he graduated from Imam al-Auzāʿī University in Islamic theology.

From December 2006 to September 2008 he was a university assistant at the research unit Islamic Religious Education at the University of Vienna . Since 2007 he has been a lecturer for the private course for teaching Islamic religion in compulsory schools. At the same time, he was a researcher on various projects in Germany and abroad. His teaching and research focus are Islam in Europe , Islamic religious instruction in Europe, Muslims of the second generation of immigrants , Koranic hermeneutics as well as Islam and the Enlightenment . Khorchide also taught in adult education institutions. Khorchide was the imam of a small mosque in Vienna- Ottakring and has worked as a religion teacher himself.

For his dissertation Islamic Religious Education between Integration and Parallel Society: Attitudes of Islamic Religious Teachers in Public Schools from 2008, Khorchide interviewed around half of the 400 Islamic religious teachers in Austria. A significant minority of those questioned rejected democratic principles and the rule of law. As a reaction in politics there were demands in all parties for stricter rules. The Islamic Faith Community resisted and spoke of "defamation".

Since July 20, 2010, Khorchide has been Sven Kalisch's successor as professor for Islamic Religious Education, with which the University of Münster has been training Islamic religion teachers since autumn 2010.

Khorchide is the editor of a historical-critical commentary on the Koran , which has been published by Herder-Verlag since autumn 2018 and is spread over a total of 17 volumes .

Positions and controversies

In his book "Islam ist Barmherzigkeit", published in 2012, Khorchide presented his vision of a modern, enlightened Islam: a humanistic religion that is primarily characterized by the mercy of God, love of God and freedom. Khorchide reads the Koran as a book from the seventh century, the individual commandments of which can no longer literally be translated into today's life. He advocates a historical-critical exegesis of the Koran . Nevertheless, with such an interpretation, the core messages of the Prophet Mohammed would be preserved.

At the end of 2013, Muslim associations (including the Coordination Council of Muslims in Germany , the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion and the Islamic Council for the Federal Republic of Germany ) protested against Khorchide, whose historical-critical method and theses on mercy they reject. In their opinion, Khorchide's theological positions did not meet scientific standards, nor did they conform to his commitment to a confessional theology of Islam. This has damaged the organized Muslims' trust in his work.

Because Khorchide received death threats, he was under police protection.

Association activities

Khorchide is a founding member of the Muslim Forum Germany, which was founded in 2015 .
