Last Rights were a short-lived hardcore punk band from Boston . She was best known through the membership of Jack "Choke" Kelly, who previously founded Negative FX and later Slapshot .

history

After the end of Negative FX, Jack Kelly formed the band Last Rights in 1983. The group only performed live once, on February 5, 1983 at Guiding Star Grange Hall in Greenfield , Massachusetts , supporting DYS . Last Rights released the single Chunk ( B-side : So Ends our Night ) on Taang Records in 1984 . Musically, Last Rights was “not quite as hectic as Negative FX”, with a stronger focus on the mid-tempo area and understandable vocals. The artwork of the single, limited to 100 copies, caused controversy. So Adolf Hitler could be seen in front of a crowd. On the back cover, under the portrait of Adolf Hitler, was written “Vocals: Choke”. Furthermore, according to the credits, the production of Klaus “Butcher Baby” Barbie was carried out in the “Ovens of Auschwitz ”. This obvious provocation was not based on right-wing extremist ideas. According to Mark McKay (Taang Records), Jack Kelly just wanted to "piss on the people". However, it would not be the last such provocation. Jack Kelly later created Stars and Stripes , who had a pro-American, heavily patriotic image.

In 1996 the single was re-released along with four previously unreleased songs on a split CD with Negative FX. In 2005 the compilation 12 '' No Guts, No Glory was released on the Belgian label Reflex Records, which also contains the six songs.

meaning

Despite its low output, Last Rights was important to the Boston straight-edge and hardcore punk scene. After Negative FX ended, Last Rights filled the void in the Boston crew that had left its breakup. After SS Decontrol and DYS ended, Choke's projects were the only connection with Boston Old School . Jack Kelly then founded Slapshot, while James Powers was later active with Defcon 4.
