Aerzen Castle

The castle Aerzen , including Castle Aerzen called one's castle , also known as domain Burg called, in the town of Aerzen (Castle Road 1) in the district of Hamelin-Pyrmont ( Weserbergland ) in Lower Saxony .

history

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1293 as "borch und stad Artelsen", but existed before that. The complex, surrounded by moats, was owned by the Lords of Everstein . In 1408, after a long feud, Hermann VII von Everstein betrothed his four-year-old daughter Elisabeth to Otto IV von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, son of the then Duke Bernhard I , and gave Aerzen as a dowry. Since 1433 the domain Aerzen was pledged by the Guelph Dukes to the Hochstift Hildesheim , which in turn passed the office and castle on as pledge to Stacius von Münchhausen and Heinrich von Hardenberg in 1508 . When there were disputes between the pledge holders in 1517, Stacius von Münchhausen was slain by his Hardenberg adversary and his entourage. His son Hilmar von Münchhausen (1512–1573) and his grandson Hilmar the Younger (1558–1617) were later able to assert themselves as pawns and drosten at Aerzen. They set up Schwöbber Castle as a private seat nearby .

In the 16th century, the Münchhausen family built the north wing of the domain castle Aerzen in the Renaissance style as the main house. In the course of the Thirty Years' War , the castle buildings burned down in 1642 when Weimar riders looted the place. After the war they were rebuilt and then used as an official courtyard. Until 1962, the complex was a state domain managed by tenants . After the domain was closed, a school with a gym was built in the castle complex in 1966. From 1985 to 1989, the south and west wings were restored and have been used in a variety of ways since then. Today there is a cultural center with regular events in the castle.
