Mohonk Mountain House , also known as Lake Mohonk Mountain House , is a historic resort located on Shawangunk Ridge in New Paltz in Ulster County , New York . Two major political conferences have taken place here. In 1986 the complex was declared a National Historic Landmark .

history

Mohonk Mountain House stands on the shores of 800 m long Lake Mohonk. Brothers Albert and Alfred Smiley, both Quakers , began building a small resort for family and close friends in the 1870s. The 890 hectare property had belonged to the family since 1869. Due to the strong demand and popularity, the hotel complex was expanded again and again until 1910 and today comprises 266 guest rooms. The landscape surrounding the hotel was co-designed, whereby the Smiley brothers attached importance to nature conservation , so that there are, for example, nature trails for geology and botany.

From 1883 to 1916, on the initiative of Albert Smiley, annual conferences to improve the living conditions of the North American Indians were held at the Mohonk Mountain House. Representatives of the Bureau of Indian Affairs , Indian leaders , and members of appropriate committees from the Senate and House of Representatives attended these meetings . The minutes of the 34 conferences are available for research purposes in the Haverford College library . Another regular conference was the Lake Mohonk Conference on International Arbitration from 1895 to 1916 , which was one of the causes for the establishment of the Permanent Court of Arbitration . The documents from these meetings were donated to Swarthmore College by the Smiley family .

On July 16, 1973, Mohonk Mountain House was added to the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark on June 24, 1986 .
