Negative FX was a short-lived, hardcore band from Boston that were instrumental in developing the straight edge movement there.

Band history

Negative FX was founded in 1981 by Jack Kelly, Pat Ratferty, Rich Collins and Dave Brown. During the short band history of just two years, a total of six concerts took place. One of them, in the opening act for the final concert of Mission of Burma , became famous in Boston because of rioting. When the sound engineer wanted to end the band's performance early, he was attacked by fans and beaten up. In April and November 1982 18 songs were recorded, but Jack Kelly injured his knee and after that the band couldn't really get together.

It wasn't until 1984, after the band had split up for a year, that Taang Records released the band's self-titled album. The cover shows the head of Charles Manson , who has the Negative-FX logo on his forehead instead of the swastika . The picture was taken from an old leaflet about the band's performance with Mission of Burma.

music

Negative FX played fast-paced hardcore, sometimes referred to as thrashcore . Chuck Kelly's fast singing voice is particularly striking. Lyrically, Jack Kelly anticipated much of what Youth of Today would later spread in New York City . The lyrics were geared towards the "Unity" idea, a merger of the hardcore scene as a whole. Further topics were of a political nature and committed to the zeitgeist, for example the cold war , the threat of nuclear war and police violence.

meaning

Together with DYS and SS Decontrol, the co-founders of the Boston Crew, a group of followers of the straight-edge lifestyle who supported each other but also attacked those who thought differently. After Negative FX ended, Jack Kelly founded Last Rights in 1983 and later Slapshot . The other members no longer appeared.
