Trenhotel
Trenhotel (dt. Train hotel ) is a train type of the Spanish Railways RENFE for night trains (similar to the Euro Night ) with lying and sleeping car of the type Talgo .
Another type of train used by Renfe for night trains was Estrella , the name given to night trains that were not operated with Talgo wagons. The last Estrella connection was discontinued in April 2015.
construction
For further details on the structure of the Talgo trains, see main article Talgo
Each Talgo train composition consists of different interchangeable train components so that each night train can (theoretically) be constructed differently. The train components consist of the Talgo series IV, V, VI and VII. The series IV does not have the option of changing the track gauge , so that trains with parts of this series cannot leave the Iberian peninsula and cannot use the Spanish high-speed network. Only trains with series VI cars can travel to neighboring France, Italy and Switzerland.
A typical Trenhotel train composition consists of the following cars:
- Asientos turista : This class is very similar to the 1st class of the day trains (“Preferente”). In some trains (Series VII and international trains) the class has recliners that are fully adjustable in the horizontal position.
- Cabinas turista : These compartments have a small washbasin and four beds, which are sold to the travelers independently of one another, although emphasis is placed on gender segregation. However, it is possible to reserve the compartment as a "family compartment" so that in this case free beds are not sold to strangers.
- Cabinas preferente : These compartments have a toilet and two beds, which are either sold together or individually, in which case the other bed remains empty.
- Cabinas gran clase : These compartments have a shower, a toilet and two beds, which are also sold either together or individually, with the other bed remaining empty in the latter case.
The train compositions of the series VII only have the recliners and the "cabinas gran class". In addition, the Trenhotel trains have a cafeteria and a restaurant (except on the Madrid – Ferrol route). The higher-quality classes also include dinner and breakfast.
The Trenhotel trains are approved for speeds between 180 km / h and 250 km / h, depending on the type, but normally the speed of 200 km / h is not exceeded. Trenhotel trains run with locomotives. Locomotives will be changed at the borders on international connections. On the connections within Spain, locomotives of the 252 series are generally used on electrified lines and the 334 series on non- electrified lines .
stretch
Trenhotel trains operate within Spain and between Spain and Portugal .
Until the end of 2012 there were Trenhotel connections to Italy and Switzerland . The lines to France were discontinued in December 2013. These international trains were operated by Elipsos , a joint venture between the Spanish Renfe and the French state-owned railway company SNCF . The trains were marketed in Spain as Elipsos Trenhotel , in France as Elipsos Trainhôtel and internationally as EuroNight .

End of night train service during the COVID-19 pandemic
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , the Trenhotel connections were discontinued from March 17, 2020. At the end of May 2020, Renfe announced that it would suspend all night train connections (Trenhotel) due to a lack of profitability. After talks with regional governments, Renfe announced on June 2, 2020 that the connections to Galicia would not be permanently discontinued, as was the connections to Portugal.
Before March 17, 2020 Renfe operated two national night train connections ( Madrid - Coruña - Pontevedra - Ferrol and Barcelona - Coruña - Vigo ) and two international connections (Madrid- Lisbon and Hendaye / Irun- Lisbon ), the latter in cooperation with CP .
