Ikue Asazaki

Ikue Asazaki ( Japanese 朝 崎 郁 恵 , Asazaki Ikue ; born November 11, 1935 on the Amami Islands , Kagoshima Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese singer of traditional folk music.

Life

Growing up in Setouchi , her father introduced her to the traditional music of Amami (Amami Shima-uta ) and Okinawa at an early age . In 1984 she moved from Yokohama , where she lived for ten years, to Tokyo , where she worked at the Japanese National Theater for almost ten years. In 1990 she performed at Carnegie Hall ( New York ), Los Angeles and Cuba . In 2002 she published Utabautayun whereupon she can be heard with traditional songs and lyrics from the Ryūkyū Islands . In 2007 she was the first female artist from Kagoshima to perform at the Ikegami Honmon-ji Temple in Tokyo.

Ikue Asazaki has worked with numerous artists such as Ryūichi Sakamoto , UA and Daikichi Yoshida in the course of her career . One of her most famous recordings is Obokuri-Eeumi which can be heard in the anime series Samurai Champloo . Their first Best Of album was released by Universal in 2008 .
