City express traffic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The city express traffic was a name for special express train connections of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) in traffic between East Berlin and other important cities of the GDR. The offer introduced in 1960 was supplemented and partially replaced by the city express from 1976 . In May 1989, city express traffic was abolished as a service name.

history

In October 1960, the DR introduced a city express service that connected the capital of the GDR, Berlin , with a number of other large cities in the GDR. Compared to most normal express trains with Y-cars , these had fewer stops and shorter travel times.

In the course books, the term urban express traffic for these trains did not appear until the late 1960s. At about the same time, the DR changed its train number system. The city express trains were given three-digit numbers in the range from 100 to 199. The trains mostly left either early in the morning and arrived in Berlin or at other destinations between 8 and 10 o'clock, or in the late afternoon with arrival in the evening.

The following trains ran daily in 1975:

Train number Train run Traffic time
D 100 Gera - Zeitz - Leipzig - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Schöneweide In the morning
D 106 Leipzig - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Lichtenberg in the evening
D 107 Berlin-Schöneweide - Berlin-Schönefeld Airport - Leipzig - Zeitz - Gera in the evening
D 120 Berlin-Lichtenberg - Oranienburg - Waren (Müritz) - Rostock In the morning
D 121 Rostock - Waren (Müritz) - Oranienburg - Berlin-Lichtenberg In the morning
D 126 Berlin Ostbahnhof - Oranienburg - Waren (Müritz) - Rostock in the evening
D 127 Rostock - Neustrelitz - Oranienburg - Berlin-Ostbahnhof in the afternoon
D 150 Meiningen - Suhl - Erfurt - Halle - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Lichtenberg In the morning
D 151 Berlin-Schöneweide - Berlin-Schönefeld Airport - Halle - Erfurt In the morning
D 156 Erfurt - Halle - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Schöneweide in the evening
D 157 Berlin-Schöneweide - Berlin-Schönefeld Airport - Halle - Erfurt - Arnstadt - Suhl - Meiningen in the evening
D 170 Dresden Hbf - Dresden-Neustadt - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Ostbahnhof In the morning
D 171 Berlin Ostbahnhof - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Dresden-Neustadt - Dresden Hbf In the morning
D 176 Dresden Hbf - Dresden-Neustadt - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Ostbahnhof in the evening
D 177 Berlin Ostbahnhof - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Dresden-Neustadt - Dresden Hbf in the evening

In some cases, the Berlin railway stations (Lichtenberg, Ostbahnhof and Schöneweide) changed over time, and the trains going south also stopped at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport. Except in Dresden (stops in Hauptbahnhof and Neustadt), the trains only served the respective main stations.

In 1975 a new product, the City Express, was introduced. Some of the city express trains were replaced by the new city express trains, some remained on offer. Since the previous train number range was occupied by the city express trains, the city express trains were given numbers in the range between 1000 and 1099.

While the city express trains always drove back to Berlin in the morning and in the late afternoon, the city express trains ran at different times. Sometimes (towards Dresden or Rostock) they drove from Berlin in the morning and back in the afternoon or evening, sometimes (towards Meiningen-Erfurt or Gera-Leipzig) about an hour away from the city express trains. Unlike the city express trains, which only run from Monday to Friday, the city express trains were mostly on the move every day.

In 1980 there were the following city express trains:

Train number Train run Traffic time
D 1000 Gera - Zeitz - Leipzig - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Ostbahnhof In the morning
D 1007 Berlin Ostbahnhof - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Leipzig - Zeitz - Gera in the evening
D 1020 Berlin-Lichtenberg - Oranienburg - Neustrelitz - Waren (Müritz) - Rostock In the morning
D 1027 Rostock - Neustrelitz - Oranienburg - Berlin-Ostbahnhof in the afternoon
D 1050 Meiningen - Suhl - Erfurt - Weimar - Halle - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Schöneweide In the morning
D 1051 Berlin-Lichtenberg - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Halle - Weimar - Erfurt in the evening
D 1056 Erfurt - Weimar - Halle - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Lichtenberg in the evening
D 1057 Berlin-Schöneweide - Berlin-Schönefeld Airport - Halle - Weimar - Erfurt - Suhl - Meiningen in the evening
D 1066 Leipzig - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Lichtenberg in the evening
D 1071 Berlin-Schöneweide - Berlin-Schönefeld Airport - Dresden-Neustadt - Dresden Hbf. In the morning
D 1076 Dresden Hbf. - Dresden Neustadt - Berlin-Schönefeld Airport - Berlin-Schöneweide in the evening

In contrast to the city express, which is subject to an express train surcharge, the city express trains could be used with a normal express train surcharge, but the travel times of the two types of train hardly differed. The city express trains ran with the usual express train carriages without any special design. Sometimes they drove a dining car, mostly a buffet car.

With the expansion of the city express offer to include trains that left Berlin in the morning and returned in the afternoon, the number of city express trains was further reduced. In 1988/89 the following city express trains ran:

Train number Train run Traffic time
D 1000 Gera - Zeitz - Leipzig - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Baumschulenweg In the morning
D 1007 Berlin Central Station - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Leipzig - Zeitz - Gera in the evening
D 1020 Berlin-Lichtenberg - Oranienburg - Neustrelitz - Waren (Müritz) - Rostock In the morning
D 1027 Rostock - Neustrelitz - Oranienburg - Berlin-Lichtenberg in the afternoon
D 1050 Meiningen - Suhl - Arnstadt - Erfurt - Weimar - Halle - Berlin Schönefeld Airport - Berlin Lichtenberg mornings, daily in summer, Mon – Sat in winter
D 1057 Berlin-Schöneweide - Berlin-Schönefeld Airport - Halle - Weimar - Erfurt - Arnstadt - Suhl - Meiningen evenings, daily in summer, except Sat. in winter

Even before the political turnaround , when the timetable was changed in May 1989, the name urban express traffic was abolished and the trains were integrated into the normal range of services offered by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. They also got other train numbers.
