Rajdhani Express (literally German: Capital Express ) is a genus of high-quality night trains of the Indian Railways . The trains connect the capital New Delhi with other important locations, mainly state capitals .

history

The first Rajdhani Express ran on March 1, 1969 between Haora ( Calcutta ) and New Delhi. The train was driven by a WDM-4 series diesel locomotive and reached speeds of up to 120 km / h. In 1972 the Rajdhani Express was introduced to Bombay .

Trains

Rajdhani Express trains only carry air-conditioned sleeping cars with the following three car classes :

  • AC First Class (Code AC1 ): First class with lockable two- and four-bed compartments
  • AC Two Tier (Code AC2 ): Second class with compartments separated by curtains, two beds on top of each other
  • AC Three Tier (Code AC3 ): Second class with compartments separated by curtains, three beds on top of each other

From 2013 the trains will be equipped with WLAN .

The trains carry up to twenty passenger cars and one generator car each at the top of the train and at the end of the train for their energy supply, even if the train runs on electrified lines . The proportion of the individual wagon classes varies depending on the route. For example , Kolkata Rajdhani , which runs daily between New Delhi and Haora, has three AC first-class cars, six AC two-tier cars and eleven AC three-tier cars.

The compositions of the trains are treated as closed units. The newer cars are manufactured under license from LHB . Locomotives of the WAP-5 , WAP-4 and WAP-7 series are mainly used on electrified lines today . The maximum speed is 140 km / h over long distances, and 160 km / h on some sections.
