A car passenger coaches is in passenger trains inserted railroad cars for transportation of passenger cars and motorcycles in the distance rail passenger transport ( car train ). It is usually designed as a double-deck car . Motorail coaches are classified as luggage wagons; the collapse of double-decker and luggage wagons creates the category DD.

Since car trains travel faster than freight trains, four-axle bogie cars are preferred. These are known as double-decker baggage trolleys of the type DD (m) . This enables speeds of up to 160 km / h. In addition, motorail carriages receive through lines for the train bus , UIC and ep lines . They are necessary so that the motorail carriages can be positioned anywhere on the train and thus also between the locomotive and the passenger carriage.

The car transport trolleys are equipped with fold-down bridges, which make it possible to load and unload several coupled cars from the end. The upper deck is accessed via a ramp. In order to be able to drive over the buffers on the one hand, and on the other hand to be able to transport vehicles with a higher roof height ( e.g. vans ) without exceeding the loading dimension, both loading levels are lowered towards the center of the wagon. Higher vehicles are then transported in the middle of the upper deck. Motorcycles can also be loaded on the lower level .

The Deutsche Bundesbahn procured a total of 165 DDm 915 wagons . The first 40 of them were built in 1969 by Waggonbau Graaff , the rest from 1970 to 1973 by Waggonfabrik Uerdingen . These wagons remained in service until the end of the auto train service in 2016.

In 1971/1972 the Deutsche Reichsbahn put 37 DDm cars from the French company ANF into operation. They were designated as DDm 916 by Deutsche Bahn and were used until 2004.

A special case is the car transport over the Hindenburgdamm ( Sylt Shuttle ) to and from Sylt , where the travelers stay in the car.

The Austrian Federal Railways took 1971 ten cars DDm 98-80 from the DÜWAG in operation, the DDm 915 similar to the DB strong. Between 1982 and 1990, eighty further developed DDm 98-70 cars were built at the Jenbacher works , of which the first 40 were painted in Eurofima-C1 paintwork . A special case similar to that of the Hindenburgdamm can also be found on the Tauernbahn car lock.

Between France and England , single- and double-decker closed motorail coaches with special dimensions are used for the “ Le Shuttle ” shuttle trains in the Eurotunnel under the English Channel . Here, too, the travelers stay with or in their motor vehicle.
