The Oldenburg – Brake railway is a former, almost 32 kilometer long railway connection from Oldenburg (Oldenburg) to Brake (Unterweser) . Since it was built by the Grand Ducal Oldenburg Railway (GOE), the line was operated continuously until 1976.

Because of the boggy subsoil, which made the construction of the line very difficult and expensive, especially between the Ipwege and Grossenmeer stations , it was nicknamed "rubber railway". The track bed laid on the soft moorland gave way under the weight of the trains and gave the passengers the impression of driving on rubber .

history

During the construction of the line, considerably more sand than usual had to be brought in for the track bedding. But even after commissioning from May 1, 1896 (only passenger traffic ), sand had to be poured into the soft ground again and again. From June 1, 1896, freight traffic could also be started. Maintenance and operation of the line repeatedly caused great difficulties.

Timetable 1944

The freight was the more important branch of this route - it resulted from the rich livestock and other agricultural products of the fertile Wesermarsch . Passenger traffic was never particularly brisk; Both the 1914 summer timetable and the 1939 summer timetable show five continuous passenger trains. A pair of trains only ran on Wednesdays and weekends in 1939. Passenger traffic was discontinued for the winter timetable in 1961. Freight traffic also declined; Handover trips from Oldenburg and Brake to Großenmeer each lasted until the early 1970s. There were also individual, not insignificant connections in the vicinity of Oldenburg and Brakes. A short flourished the track again in 1972 and 1976, when due to construction work, the Hunte Bridge of Hude-Nordenham be blocked had. The ore trains from Nordenham – Blexen continued via Brake – Großenmeer – Oldenburg towards Bremen .

Shortly after the repairs to the Huntebrücke were completed, ore traffic was shifted back again and in spring 1976 the line between Oldenburg- Etzhorn and Ipwege was dismantled. Handover traffic from the service of the remaining sidings lasted until the 1990s. On May 25, 1989, freight traffic between Brake and Großenmeer was stopped. The Etzhorn – Ohmstede section had been without freight traffic since May 30, 1987 and was closed on December 31, 1988. On May 1, 1998, the last remaining southern section of Oldenburg Hbf –Oldenburg– Ohmstede was shut down. In Brake there is still a remnant stretch of about one kilometer from an industrial company, but the siding is no longer used and is closed for business purposes.

The route can be traveled between the Oldenburg main station and the Wehdestrasse level crossing and is terminated there with a buffer stop. The continuation to the east is overgrown, the rails at the crossings have disappeared under asphalt. The railway line between the Elsflether Road and the junction with the A29 was bought by the city of Oldenburg in 1994 and than 9.1  hectares large protected landscape elements Old Braker Railway reported. The rails were removed and a combined cycle and footpath set up. To the north of this, the route is interrupted by a missing bridge over the A29. The former railway embankment in Loyerberg has been a protected landscape area since 1985 . A path for walkers and cyclists has also been created between Großenmeer and Brake.

As part of the connection to the Jade-Weser Port , a reactivation of parts of the route was discussed, but rejected as uneconomical.
