On the Dütebrücke in the west of Osnabrück , in the Atter district , the federal motorway 1 crosses the Düte river and the Löhne – Rheine railway line . It is located north of the Lotte / Osnabrück motorway junction between this and the Osnabrück-Hafen junction. More than 64,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day, including 16,000 trucks. Due to its special construction, the bridge has become a major problem in the German motorway network in recent years, as the load-bearing capacity of the bridge had to be restricted. Work is currently underway on the construction of a new bridge, which in terms of its extent represents a process that is still unique in Germany.

location

The 270-meter-long Dütebrücke is located west of the central settlement of the Osnabrück district of Atter near the border with the Lotte municipality , which also represents the border between the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony . The Attersee recreation area and the Atter / Büren industrial area are in the immediate vicinity of the bridge . A few kilometers south, also on Autobahn 1, the Habichtswald, Smanforde and Exterheide valley bridges are currently being rebuilt.

Building

In contrast to most of the other motorway bridges in Germany, the bridge consists of only one bridge construction for both lanes. Due to this special construction, a simple demolition and rebuilding is not possible, as there is no parallel bridge as an alternative. For dismantling during operation, the construction is sawn through in the middle. Traffic should continue on one lane, while the other direction will be dismantled. After the completion of the new partial bridge, the other lane will be demolished and rebuilt as a separate bridge. However, since the bridge is not load-bearing when it is sawn, a support frame weighing 4000 tons must hold the bridge in order to guarantee the statics. Another handicap during the construction work on the bridge are the neighboring Düteauen, which are under nature protection, as well as the electrified railway line so that some work can only be done during the breaks in operation of the railway.

With a length of 301 meters and a width of 36.5 meters, the new bridge will be slightly larger than the existing one and will be constructed in two parts, i.e. with separate bridges in each direction. Instead of the previous eight pairs of supporting pillars, only seven will be required per bridge structure in the future, and the number of lanes will increase from 2 to 3 in each direction. The calculated service life is given as 80 to 100 years.

history

From 1968 to 2010

With the construction of the Federal Motorway 1 in 1967/68, the Dütebrücke was also built. After a long four-lane period, the bridge was extended to six lanes in 2005, dispensing with the hard shoulder. An appraisal from 2004 showed the load-bearing capacity for six lanes, so that the expansion of the Lotter Kreuz began quickly. A new report in 2010, in which the loads were adjusted, reduced the remaining service life of the bridge to five years. As an immediate measure, one lane for traffic was withdrawn from each directional lane and closed. Demarcations should prevent stopping on the disused areas, and a minimum distance for trucks was marked with signs.

2011 to 2020

The first planning for the new bridge was started immediately. The construction time was initially estimated at four years and should cost 60.1 million euros. Construction started in 2016.

Soil stabilization

Work to improve the soil under the bridge

At the location of the bridge there are only a few stable layers in the subsoil, especially silt and humus areas in the Dütewood make a new building difficult. As a preparatory measure for the construction of the auxiliary structure and the replacement bridge, a total of 8,300 CSV bored piles were set in 2016 and 2017 . These have a diameter of 15 centimeters and a length of 13 meters. They were filled with a gravel-sand-cement mixture, which hardens in the borehole and creates a stable soil. The finished bored piles were loaded with 100 kilonewtons per square meter in a load test. For this purpose, large sandbags were piled up on a wooden structure. The measure caused costs of 0.9 million euros.

Soil compaction

An alternative method of soil compaction was used in places where the drilling rig could not work due to the low bridge height. For this purpose, 3500 concrete blocks measuring 1.60 m long and 80 cm high and wide were piled up under the bridge in order to compact the soil to improve the load-bearing capacity. These 2.5 ton trestles were stacked on top of each other in 25 layers. This procedure is relatively new and has hardly been used so far.

demolition

Work on the bridge's southern trailer

Support scaffolding has been installed under the bridge since May 2017. After the scaffolding was completed, the bridge and the motorway section were completely closed in both directions between January 12 and 15, 2018. During the full closure, the bridge was cut into two halves with the aid of a hydraulic cutting wheel model "DMW 220" from the manufacturer KEMROC, which was attached to a 50 t excavator. The sawing was carried out with a roadway thickness of 65 cm at 30 m / h.Because the work was delayed, Federal Motorway 1 was only released again at around 3 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2018, which had a significant impact on rush hour traffic.

During the construction work, the traffic runs over the western half (direction Münster). Meanwhile the eastern half (direction Bremen) was demolished and rebuilt with three lanes. After the completion of the eastern half, the western half of the bridge will be demolished and the new construction will be carried out separately. In October 2018, the pile foundation of the east bridge with 171 concrete piles was completed, so that construction of the actual bridge could begin. Traffic on the completed half of the bridge has been running since May 12, 2020.

The new building should be completed by 2021.
