Hankenberge is part of the entire municipality of Hilter am Teutoburg Forest in the district of Osnabrück in Lower Saxony with around 700 inhabitants. It consists of the parts Hankenberge Ort and Hankenberge Sauerland. Until 1972 Hankenberge was an independent municipality. In the course of the district reform , it became part of the entire Hilter community.

Origin of name

Two traditions are known about the naming of the place.

On the one hand, Hankenberge can be derived from the Old High German "hangen" = slope and "berg" = mountain. It roughly means the village on the mountainside.

On the other hand, there is a legend according to which small dwarf-like beings, the "honken", similar to the brownies , are said to have helped the inhabitants of this village with their daily work and that is why the village was named after them.

Hankenberge is located in the western area of ​​the Teutoburg Forest and borders in the north on Georgsmarienhütte , in the east on Wellendorf , in the south on Hilter and in the west on the Teutoburg Forest. The highest mountain is the Limberg in the Teutoburg Forest with a height of 194.3 meters. In 1910 the Zeppelin LZ7 "Germany" crashed on this mountain . history

Wealden coal has been mined in the area of ​​the former Hilterberg colliery on the edge of Hankenberge since 1885/86 . The mine was closed in 1903. A memorial plaque commemorates mining. After the end of the Second World War, coal was mined again until 1953.

On July 1, 1972, Hankenberge was incorporated into the municipality of Hilter am Teutoburg Forest.

Hankenberge was a station on the Osnabrück – Brackwede (-Bielefeld, "Haller Willem") railway .

There are currently bus connections to Osnabrück and Bad Rothenfelde .

societies

The community of Hankenberge and the community of Wellendorf maintain a sports club, the so-called sports community Hankenberge Wellendorf (short: SG-Hankenberge / Wellendorf or SGHW). In 2008, after the gymnastics department, the youth of the soccer department also merged with TuS Borgloh. There is also a traditional rifleman and homeland club, as well as a marching band.

Events

The Schützen- und Heimatverein Hankenberge celebrates its shooting festival every autumn, it is the last shooting festival of the year in Lower Saxony.

Furthermore, an indoor soccer tournament, the Dütecup, has been held since 2006.
