Hilterberg colliery
The former Hilterberg colliery is located on Limberg in the Teutoburg Forest . It belongs to the area of the rural community Hankenberge / Hilter .
history
Beginnings in the colliery
The shaft at the Hilterberg colliery was built in 1885/1886 . It had a depth of 63.92 meters. The shaft was connected to the Karlsstollen , built in 1872 , in which Wealden coal was also mined . Furthermore, seam 3 (narrow bank) and seam 4 (thick bank) were mined on several levels. The equipment included two steam boilers. At times, up to 213 miners were employed in the tunnels of the Hilterberg colliery .
Boom
After the opening of the Osnabrück-Brackwede railway line , also known as Haller Willem , the mine owner Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein built a 1630 m long so-called Otto cable car with which the coal was transported to the nearby train station in Wellendorf . While initially only 9,000 tons of coal were mined per year, in 1893 the entire daily requirement of the steelworks in Georgsmarienhütte of 60 tons of coal per day could be mined in the Hilterberg colliery.
Shutdown
Due to strong water ingress and the now cheaper option of obtaining coal from the Werne colliery , mining at the Hilterberg colliery was finally stopped on March 31, 1903 and the cable car dismantled.
20th century
The entry point of the mine, the mouth hole , was largely filled in, only the upper beams can be seen. In addition, some old devices from the time and an information board still bear witness to the former heyday of mining in this region. After the end of the Second World War , coal was mined again until 1953.
