geography

Geographical location

The market square of Leopoldshöhe in the foreground, to the left of the ev.-ref. Church the parish hall and the rectory

The main town Leopoldshöhe is roughly in the middle between the cities of Bielefeld, Bad Salzuflen , Lage and Oerlinghausen . The highest elevation is located in the extreme south-west of the municipality with the Merkslohberg in the area of the Osning with a height of 246.4  m above sea level. NHN . The lowest point of the municipality is in the extreme north-east of the municipality in the district of Krentrup, immediately near the confluence of the Siekbach into the Werre at 81.3  m above sea level. NHN . The district of Leopoldshöhe, which gave the municipality its name, is located roughly in the center and, at 1.8 km², is the smallest of the eight districts.

The municipal area is drained via the Windwehe , Heipker Bach , Bentgraben (sometimes called "Eselsbach") and Siekbach over the Werre to the Weser .

geology

Geothermal map of Leopoldshöhe

The municipality goes from south to north naturally from the Bielefelder Osning -forland into the Ravensberg hill country .

Solid rock from the Middle Ages and the geologically older layers of the Keuper can be found in the subsurface . To the Teutoburg Forest there are limestones of the shell limestone . Ice-age boulder clay and loess at least partially cover the clay stones of the Lias . The clay stones are about 100 meters thick. The groundwater below is salinized, especially due to sulphates . To the east, trochitic limestone falls into the clay layer and offers the possibility of drinking water supply. The lime has been partially mined as a material, the clay stones are used as raw material for bricks.

Leopoldshöhe is medium to good, in some cases very good, for the use of geothermal heat sources by means of a geothermal probe and for heat recovery through heat pump heating (see the adjacent map).

Expansion and use of the municipal area

The municipality covers 36.92 square kilometers, it measures about 5.5 kilometers in the east-west extension and about 8 kilometers in the north-south extension. The Merkslohberg is 254.5  m above sea level. NHN the highest point in the community; the lowest point is 81.3  m above sea level. NHN on the Werre in the north of the district of Krentrup.

The Leopoldshöhe area is characterized on the one hand by its proximity to the city of Bielefeld by residential buildings and traffic areas, on the other hand by its tradition of agricultural use. Forest areas are only available below average.

Housing construction has been controlled by the municipal council with the help of Leopoldshöher Immobilien- und Liegenschaftsverwaltung (LIL) since 1996. The aim is to provide young families with inexpensive building land. Since then, new residential building areas have only been shown where the majority of the areas are owned by LIL.

The land use can be found in the following table:

Area according to type of use Area in ha Share of total area
Agricultural area 2,483 67.2 percent
Forest area 329 8.9 percent
Settlement and traffic areas 846 22.9 percent
Water surface 28 0.8 percent
other use 7th 0.2 percent

Neighboring communities

The community borders (clockwise) on the cities of Bad Salzuflen (districts Lockhausen , Wülfer-Bexten and Holzhausen ), Lage , Oerlinghausen (all in the Lippe district) and Bielefeld. From Bielefeld, the districts of Heepen with the district Brönninghausen and Stieghorst with the districts Ubbedissen and Lämershagen-Gräfinghagen border on Leopoldshöher area.

Community structure

The municipality is divided into eight districts, which are referred to as districts. Until the municipal reform in 1969, these were independent municipalities:

history

The area of the community Leopoldshöhe was probably already inhabited around 2000 years ago; this is supported by the remains of the settlement in Bechterdissen, which were dated to the Cheruscan period. Settlements that already existed around the year 500 are in Greste and the Milse estate in Bechterdissen. Based on the ending "-trup" (= village ) it is now assumed that Krentrup received its name in the early Middle Ages before the year 800. It is widely believed that this ending is older than the ending "-hausen" and the ending "-issen" derived from "-hausen".

The area was first mentioned in a document on May 25, 1036. The Busdorf document shows that Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn gave the Busdorf canon monastery the main courtyard Niederbarkhausen in today's Leopoldshöher district of Asemissen with the associated Vorwerk Eckendorf in today's Leopoldshöher district of Schuckenbaum , the court Oerlinghausen , the estate Menkhausen (now Oerlinghausen), the later Meierhof to Heepen and later Meierhof Borgsen in Brackwede for fief passes.

The settlement initially consisted of single and double farms on a large scale as well as individual, somewhat larger farm hamlets; In the later Middle Ages, more and more land was developed between these farms, on which the smaller Kötter farms were built.

The first documentary mentions of today's Leopoldshöher districts, which emerged from the previous farmers in 1841, took place in the following years:

  • 1289 Krentrup
  • 1338 Asemissi
  • 1488 Greste (Meier zu Ermgassen mentioned 1395)
Sheep barn on the Ermgassen farm in Greste
  • around 1500 Bechterdissen
  • around 1500 Schuckenbaum

Hagensiedlungen such as Nienhagen, Bexterhagen, Schuckenhagen or Mackenbruch (mentioned in the Landschatzregister from 1467) emerged in the High Middle Ages , i.e. from about the middle of the 11th century to the middle of the 13th century.

Other places that were mentioned early on are:

Around 1500 there were a larger number of farms in the offices of Oerlinghausen and Schötmar than in other parts of Lippe. Today's municipal area also belonged to these offices. Larger parts of today's municipal area with the settlements Rosenhagen, Hook Heath, Krentruperhagen, Bexterhagen-Nienhagen belonged to the tenth district of the Villikation Iggenhausen the convent Corvey .

During the Everstein feud (1403 to 1407), the courtyards in the south of today's municipality were particularly badly affected. Later, during the Thirty Years 'War and the Seven Years' War, devastating looting of troops passing through took place.

The lower jurisdiction and the administration, however, were divided between the feudal official meetings in Niederbarkhausen and Heerse or Bexten.

Around 1700 the aristocratic estates of Dahlhausen, Eckendorf, Schackenburg, Schuckenhagen and Hovedissen as well as the farmers' associations Asemissen, Bechterdissen, Greste-Evenhausen, Hovedissen , Nienhagen, Eckendorf and Bexterhagen are mentioned in a printed script.

The Kirchdorf Leopoldshöhe itself, however, was only founded in 1850/51 on a hill in the area of Krentrup and Hovedissen, equidistant from the churches in Schötmar , Oerlinghausen and Heepen , in order to make church attendance easier for the residents of the surrounding courtyards. When the new church was inaugurated, Prince Leopold II of Lippe gave it the name "Leopoldshöhe". On September 1, 1921, the village, which had about 800 inhabitants at that time, became an independent municipality, which was formed from parts of the dissolved municipality of Hovedissen and parts of the municipality of Greste. Thus the political community is younger than the parish of Leopoldshöhe.

The Nazis met in the Leopold Higher communities divided response: While the Nazi Party in the former town Leopoldshöhe mostly above-average results achieved, kept them in the community Asemissen still in the Lippe state election in 1933 only 22 percent - less than half of the result of the SPD . Numerous acts of "minor resistance" have come down to us from the southern small communities - such as vandalism against NSDAP symbols.

Religions

St. Johannis Baptist

Before the Reformation, the country was ecclesiastically divided between the parishes of Oerlinghausen and Schötmar , which were branches of the Diocese of Paderborn . The current districts of Asemissen, Bechterdissen, Greste, Leopoldshöhe, Schuckenbaum and Krentrup belonged to Oerlinghausen, and the districts of Nienhagen and Bexterhagen to Schötmar.

In 1538 the Lutheran church order was passed. The area of the community Leopoldshöhe also became Lutheran.

In 1607, as a result of a dispute, the two parishes of Oerlinghausen and Schötmar came through a contract between Bishop Dietrich von Fürstenberg and Simon VI. to the Principality of Lippe , from then on they were looked after by the Evangelical Church.

The vast majority of the population is Protestant Reformed . The northern parish area belongs to the parish of Leopoldshöhe. Your church is the Evangelical Reformed Church Leopoldshöhe , built in 1850 and 1851 by Ferdinand Ludwig August Merckel . The southern parish area belongs to the parish Asemissen-Bechterdissen, whose church is in the district of Bechterdissen . Both parishes belong to the Lage class of the Lippe regional church .

An indication of the distribution can be the denomination of the Leopoldshöher students. In 2008, 1175 of the students were Protestant, 185 Catholic, 42 Islamic. 52 stated that they belonged to another denomination and 253 did not belong to any denomination.

Between 1966 and 1968, the Catholic Church of the Resurrection of Christ was built as a branch church of the parish of St. Michael in Oerlinghausen in Greste. It was not until 2000 and 2001 that another branch church of the Oerlinghauser parish in the center of Leopoldshöher was built with St. Johannes Baptist . The architect for this new building was Dieter Georg Baumewerd . In 2018 the church, including the outbuildings, was demolished due to significant construction defects. The "Johanneshof", a multi-generation project, is to be built on the site.

In the district of Bechterdissen there is a Mennonite church, in the district of Asemissen there is a New Apostolic church and in the district of Bexterhagen there is a Protestant-free church community.

Incorporations

With effect from January 1, 1969, the law on the reorganization of the Lemgo district ( Lemgo Law ) came into force and restructured the Lemgo district. The formerly independent communities Asemissen, Bechterdissen, Bexterhagen, Greste, Krentrup, Leopoldshöhe, Nienhagen and Schuckenbaum were merged to form the new community Leopoldshöhe with a population of 10,200.

“Divided diagonally by red and green by a silver (white) wavy bar; above a golden (yellow) gear wheel, below a silver (white) turnip. "

The coat of arms of the municipality of Leopoldshöhe was awarded with a certificate from the District President Detmold on March 3, 1971. It is a so-called speaking coat of arms . The wave bar represents the flowing wind , a stream through Leopoldshöhe. The gear wheel with eight prongs on the right is a symbol for the eight parts that make up the community. The beet stands for agriculture, in particular for the important beet seed cultivation on Gut Eckendorf .

Town twinning

The Felix Fechenbach Comprehensive School Leopoldshöhe has had a school partnership with the College Jean Moulin in St. Gaultier in France since 1985 . The other municipalities in the canton also took part. In 1990 this partnership was extended to the political level with the signing of the partnership document. Groups and clubs are visited every year. The Brenne market in St. Gaultier and the autumn and spring market in Leopoldshöhe are an integral part of the annual program. At the beginning of December 1998 there was the first Christmas market in St. Gaultier, which was organized by clubs and associations from Leopoldshöhe. The student exchange will also continue to be maintained; In this way, schoolchildren can not only take part in lessons, but also internships in partnership.

Since September 1990, Leopoldshöhe has also had an intra-German town partnership with Schweina on the western edge of the Thuringian Forest. Since the distance between the two cities is only 250 km, many personal contacts have already been established and the official visits are reduced to a few events. The highlight of the annual calendar is the visit to the cave festival in June, in which groups from Leopoldshöhe regularly take part.

In January 1999, a community partnership with Mysłakowice in Poland was established. Meetings have taken place several times a year since the partnership began. Here, too, student exchanges between the Felix Fechenbach Comprehensive School and a school in Mysłakowice have established themselves. Furthermore, encounters between youth groups are promoted in order to break down barriers and prejudices that still exist.

Culture and sights

theatre

The community of Leopoldshöhe does not have its own theater, but from autumn 2009 the new canteen and multi-purpose building will provide an event location. Otherwise, the facilities of the surrounding cities and communities must be used. The next theater is the Kur- und Stadttheater in Bad Salzuflen, which is played by changing ensembles and by the Detmold State Theater. Other accessible facilities are the Landestheater Detmold and the municipal theater Bielefeld .

Today's Heimatmuseum Heimathof

The Heimatmuseum Heimathof shows objects from the rural and handicraft sectors. In addition to a bakery, there is also a shoemaker, tailor and carpenter's workshop. Buildings

Meierhof Dahlhausen
Stone granary of the Niederbarkhausen estate
  • Gut Eckendorf in the Schuckenbaum district : the mansion is a three-winged complex on an island with a bridge to the street. The north wing, as well as the pavilion tower crowned by a roof turret on the southeast corner were built by Arnold Schierheim from 1630. The east wing was built in 1776 in the form of classicism . The estate is located in a landscape park . The associated farm buildings across the street were not built until the end of the 19th century after a fire.
  • Gut Hovedissen : The manor house (owned by the Count von der Schulenburg ), a two-storey building with a plastered facade, the rear of which consists largely of exposed framework, probably dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. There are uneven wing structures on the courtyard side. The facility was renewed in the early 20th century. The half-timbered outbuildings were probably built in the 18th century.
  • The Meierhof Dalhausen in the Greste district: The main house is a four-column building from the 2nd half of the 16th century. The boarded gable triangle protrudes over lugs . Headbands can be found on the eaves.
  • Gut Barkhausen in Niederbarkhausen: Not far from the manor house is the so-called “farmer's castle”. It is originally a two-storey stone granary that probably dates back to the Middle Ages. It was renewed around 1870 and increased by one floor. The latter protrudes slightly on a neo-Romanesque arched frieze made of stone. During the Second World War, an air raid shelter was installed on the ground floor. In 1960 the roof structure with the clock tower was renewed to simplify matters.

Parks and nature reserves

The entire municipality has been part of the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge Nature Park since 2008 .

The Gutspark Eckendorf is a historic manor park of 3.4 hectares and is privately owned. The park was probably created in the middle of the 19th century. In the park there is an approximately 750 year old English oak with a trunk circumference of 13 meters. 47 types of wood from subtropical and temperate zones are represented in the park. "The structure of the manor park has been preserved to this day and is one of the most impressive and best-maintained parks in the region."

The historic Niederbarkhausen estate park with around 2.5 hectares is also privately owned. On a Prussian land survey from 1895, the manor is shown embedded in a small landscaped park. An old tree population in the lawns is characteristic. The park has largely been preserved in its basic structure and is in good condition.

The nature reserve Windwehetal has a size of 56.5 hectares and is located in the west and south of the municipality. The nature reserve includes morphologically particularly pronounced sections of the Windwehe valley system with near-natural, sometimes strongly meandering streams and side sinks typical of the landscape. Along the course of the stream there are gallery forests made of stream alder, ash, alder, pedunculate oak and hornbeam. The nature reserve continues where the wind drift marks the border with Bielefeld, on the other side of the bank and in the lower reaches of the wind drift in Bielefeld's urban area as the "Windweheniederung" nature reserve.

The Heipker See nature reserve is located in the northeastern area of the municipality on the Werre and covers 25 hectares. The area essentially consists of a former quarry pond with two islands, grassland and forest areas and a section of the Werre Valley. The area includes, among other things, wet meadows, alluvial forests and forest areas with alder, oak and beech trees. In the area of the nature reserve, the Heipker Bach and the Bentgraben flow into the Werre.

The Grüte nature reserve is located in the north of Oerlinghausen and comes close to Gut Niederbarkhausen in the south of the Leopoldshöher area, with a total of 28.5 hectares. The nature reserve is named after the "Grütebach", which flows through a morphologically particularly pronounced Kerbtal with adjacent beech forest stands on the limestone ridge of the Bielefeld Osnings. The nature reserve borders directly on the "Gutspark Niederbarkhausen" described above, the Grütebach supplies the water for a pond in the park. The "Grütebach" is later named Holzkampbach and later flows into the wind drift .

Economy and Infrastructure

The community consists of spatially separated districts. The eponymous districts Leopoldshöhe and Asemissen in particular have a well-developed infrastructure (supermarkets, gas stations, pharmacies, bakers, drugstores, specialized shops, etc.), but only Leopoldshöhe has a real village center.

The community is very popular with young families, as the large cities of Bielefeld (35 minutes by bus, 25 minutes by car, 10 minutes by train) and Paderborn (50 minutes by train and 45 minutes by car) can be reached quickly.

Between 2007 and 2009, the market square and streets in the center of the Leopoldshöhe district were completely renovated and redesigned.

traffic

Street

Leopoldshöhe is connected to Bielefeld and the district town of Detmold via the federal highway 66 , which runs on the southern edge of the municipality . The federal motorway 2 runs past the municipality a few hundred meters away, so that it can be reached very quickly via the B 66 and the Bielefeld-Ost junction (number 27) as well as via the district road 5 and the Ostwestfalen-Lippe junction (number 28) . The north-south axis of the community is Landstrasse 751, which runs from the motorway slip road (to the Herford / Bad Salzuflen junction number 29) in Bad Salzuflen - Schötmar via the new Leopoldshöhe bypass , through Asemissen and on the direct route via Oerlinghausen to the A 33 at Stukenbrock .

Rail and bus transport

Oerlinghausen station in Leopoldshöhe

The Oerlinghausen train station is located in the Asemissen district on the Bielefeld – Lemgo line . This name was given because the route of the Begatalbahn (originally leading to Hameln ) and the geographical location did not allow a station in the Oerlinghauser area. When the route opened in October 1903, what was then Oerlinghausen (municipal law 1926) was the more important location. In 1910, Asemissen had 734 inhabitants with the Niederbarkhausen manor , the community of Oerlinghausen 2774. The name of the station has remained the same since then. Another stop, Helpup , is also very close to the Leopoldshöhe-Oerlinghausen border. This stop in the area of Oerlinghausen is important for the connection of the Leopoldshöher district of Greste .

The railway line is served every hour by the RE  82 “Der Leineweber” ( Altenbeken -) Detmold - Lage - Bielefeld (on Sundays only every two hours) and by the RB 73 “Der Lipperländer” Lemgo -Lage-Bielefeld. Local rail passenger transport is carried out by the Eurobahn with diesel railcars of the Bombardier Talent type .

A local bus line ("Pendel-Leo") connects the Oerlinghausen station with the districts of Bechterdissen, Greste, Leopoldshöhe, Schuckenbaum, Nienhagen and Bexterhagen. Several regional bus routes go to Bielefeld, Bad Salzuflen , Oerlinghausen and Lage. There is a night bus connection to Bielefeld.

The area of the community Leopoldshöhe is in the area of the tariff association “Der Sechser” ( OWL Verkehr GmbH ).

The WDR studio in Bielefeld broadcasts radio and television news from the region. In addition, Radio Lippe broadcasts from Detmold .

The Leopoldshöhe volunteer fire brigade has existed since 1928 . There are twelve women and 68 men in the operations department, around 30 young people in the youth fire brigade and 20 members in the honorary department (as of October 30, 2017). The current fire station was built in 1985 on a property owned by the regional association. The firefighters are a command vehicle , three crew transport vehicle , three fire trucks, two device and a rescue truck and a ladder for their assignments.

Due to the creation of the large community Leopoldshöhe, there are two library locations. In Leopoldshöhe there is the BIB-Leo (books, information, education), in which additional offers of the VHS-Lippe are offered. The second location is in the core area of the Asemissen district. The library used to be housed in a basement room in the town hall before construction of the BiB began in 1999. The library in Asemissen is a part-time branch. Originally there were libraries in Bexterhagen, Greste, Krentrup and Schuckenbaum. The municipality of Leopoldshöhe is responsible for the two libraries.

The two children, youth and cultural centers Leos in the school and sports center in Leopoldshöhe and the GreAse in the southern district of Greste offer an extensive extracurricular program of children and youth education and a large leisure-time educational offer of open child and youth work. In addition, the new family service office was set up in the Leos in January 2009 , which is the contact and information point for parents, children and young people.

Eight day-care centers are available in Leopoldshöhe for early childhood education. Half of it is sponsored by the municipality, the rest are supported by the AWO , the DRK and the ev.-ref. Asemissen / Bechterdissen parish.

The community is responsible for the North Primary School, the Asemissen Primary School and the Felix Fechenbach Comprehensive School . For other types of school, the offers of the surrounding towns of Bad Salzuflen, Lage, Oerlinghausen and Bielefeld must be used. As part of a school association, the municipality of Leopoldshöhe shares the costs of the local Fröbelschule with the city of Oerlinghausen, a special needs school with a special focus on “learning” in primary and secondary level I. In 2007, a total of 1,751 students were taught at the community's general schools with 114 teachers taught, of which 43 percent in elementary schools and 57 percent in comprehensive schools.
