The Roman Catholic Church of St. Johannes Baptist was a church building in Leopoldshöhe in the Lippe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It was consecrated in 2002 and demolished 16 years later in 2018 due to structural defects. The church was a branch church of the Catholic parish of St. Michael Oerlinghausen . The parish belongs to the Lippe-West Pastoral Association in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

At the end of the Second World War , Leopoldshöhe became the pastoral care station of Lage , until then there were only a maximum of four local Catholic families. From 1944 there were evacuated people from the Ruhr area and from 1946 displaced people from the eastern areas, including Catholics. First of all, the Evangelical Reformed parish of Leopoldshöhe made their church available to them for shared use. In May 1949, the Catholic community bought an inn with an adjoining hall and, with the help of the Bonifatiusverein and the Mission Church of Pius XII , converted this facility into an emergency church . A fire severely damaged the building in 1987 and it was no longer possible to completely restore it. A makeshift repair was carried out, which was intended for a reasonable period of time. The parish bought a building site to build a new church. Dieter Georg Baumewerd from Münster won the architectural competition that followed . After lengthy discussions, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 1, 2000. The consecration was made by Auxiliary Bishop Paul Consbruch on June 30, 2002.

Due to serious structural defects, the church was closed at the end of 2014 and profaned on November 25, 2016 . The demolition work began on February 15, 2018 and ended on March 9, 2018.

The bells, a donation from the Rudolf August Oetker Foundation , went to the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Bad Driburg, the bell chair was taken over by the St. Johannes Baptist Church in Bielefeld-Schildesche. The principles (including altar, baptismal font, candlestick) by the Rietberg sculptor Johannes Niemeier found a new place in St. Vitus in Bad Driburg-Alhausen. The benches went to the Liebfrauenkirche in Bielefeld-Jöllenbeck. The organ was taken over by the old pilgrimage church in Werl.

architecture

The characteristic church consisted of the three structures church, tower and parsonage, which were arranged around a church square. The street was separated from the church square by a low wall. The outer walls were made of concrete painted white. The steeple rose above a square plan. The church interior was formed by two curved wall shells that were not directly connected to one another. The room was closed by two glass vestibules, it was illuminated by a strip of glass in the upper area. The room for discussions, the parish rooms and the sacristy were housed in two structures at an angle to one another. The confessional room was in the tower. The gray natural stone floor sloped slightly towards the altar island.
