Old pilgrimage church (Werl)

The old pilgrimage church (also former Capuchin and Franciscan church) of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a listed church building in Werl , a town in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It borders directly on the pilgrimage basilica in the historic old town , from which it is dominated in its effect.

History and architecture

Around 1661 began the pilgrimage to the miraculous image of Mary and fast the previous church, one was monastery church of the Capuchins of 1662, dilapidated and was demolished. The plans for the previous building were made by the Capuchin brother Bonitus from Trier.

The old pilgrimage church was built in its place from 1786 to 1789 . The builder was Franz Arnold Matthias Boner. The church is a plastered hall with five bays that closes on five sides. The ceiling consists of ridge vaults that rest on pillars with flat templates and strongly profiled fighters . the furnishings date from the 18th century. The roof turret is polygonal. In 1861 the building was expanded again to include the east yoke and the choir . The stepped buttresses were also added or shaped. The curved west gable is structured by a high arched window and a figure niche. In the niche there is a statue of Mary by the sculptor Joseph Wäscher . The uniform carved furnishings come from the time it was built. The version was amended in 1953 based on findings.

After this church had become too small again, the pilgrimage basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (Werl) was built right next to it .
