Jazz & Blues Open Wendelstein
The Jazz & Blues Open Wendelstein took place for the first time in 1994 in Wendelstein under the name New Orleans Music Festival Wendelstein. The festival, which was founded in 1994 by Mark Wendelstein's cultural advisor Gerd Huke, has developed into a jazz festival that is well known beyond the borders of Bavaria over the 19 years of his leadership. The festival always takes place in the week before May 1st and the weekend after May 1st. In 2013 the festival was realigned. Gerd Huke retired and handed the festival over to Andrea Söllner. Jan Rottau brought this to Wendelstein as artistic director. What began with the focus on “New Orleans” in 1994, developed both programmatically and spatially.
Festival management
Until 2012 Gerd Huke was both director and artistic director of the festival. Colloquially, Gerd Huke was referred to as the festival organizer. He died on January 29, 2017 at the age of 69 after a brief serious illness. From 2013 Andrea Söllner from Markt Wendelstein has been the festival director, and Jan Rottau from Ingolstadt is the artistic director of the festival. The organizer of the festival is the cultural department of the Wendelstein market.
Venues
The concerts of the Jazz & Blues Open take place at various locations in Wendelstein. In addition to large-scale concerts (event hall at FV Wendelstein), many concerts take place in an intimate setting in the Jegelscheune Wendelstein, which was opened in 1991 by the Wendelstein market. Other localities are the St. Nikolaus Church, Guy's Weinzelt, Wendelstein grammar school, the market square in Wendelstein and various pubs and taverns. In 2004 the Spider Murphy Gang played in the Sternenzelt, a circus tent on Röthenbacher Str. In Wendelstein.
