Marialy Pacheco (born January 4, 1983 in Havana , Cuba) is a Cuban jazz pianist and composer living in Germany .

Career

Pacheco grew up in a musical environment. Both parents and her aunt are classically trained musicians, and she herself starts her musical training at an early age at her own insistence. In 1990 Marialy Pacheco was accepted at the Conservatorio Alejandro García Caturla (Havana / Cuba) at the age of seven . She received her further school and musical training from 1998 onwards at the Escuela Nacional de Artes (Havana / Cuba), which she graduated with distinction in 2002 at the age of 19. Immediately afterwards, Marialy Pacheco began a three-year course in composition with Tulio Peramo Cabrera at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. In 2004 she traveled to Bremen (Germany) to accompany her mother's choir to the Choir Olympics , where they won two gold medals for their lectures. Pacheco's piano playing attracted a lot of attention; In 2005 she returned to Germany and recorded her first trio album Bendiciones , which was followed by two more albums in 2006 with Mi Azul and in 2008 with Destinos . In 2008 she gave two concerts as a guest soloist together with the Australian guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel in Bremen (Glocke) and in Hamburg (Laeiszhalle).

Pacheco lived in Germany until 2009, only to follow a call to Brisbane, Australia in March of the same year. In 2011 she released her solo album Songs That I Love there , a one-take recording recorded at The Judith Wright Center of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane. Appearances in Australia and Japan followed. In 2012 she recorded her trio album Tokyo Call in Japan and returned to Europe to take part in the Piano Solo Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival . She was the first woman to win this competition.

In March 2013, Pacheco moved entirely to Europe and has since had her first residence in Germany. In spring 2014 she released her trio album Introducing with Juan Camilo Villa, bass and Miguel Altamar, drums, as guest musicians with: Joo Kraus , trumpet and Rhani Krija , percussion. A limited audiophile solo vinyl album followed in January 2016, which was produced as a live studio concert in front of an audience using the analog recording process.

With the Babelsberg Film Orchestra she performed as a soloist in early 2017 as part of the “Ladies Jazz Night” series in the sold-out Nikolaisaal in Potsdam. In April 2017 the album "Duets" was released, for whose recordings Marialy Pacheco invited her favorite musicians and friends to the studio. In summer 2017 she appeared again at the Montreux Jazz Festival and made her debut at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. In September 2017 Pacheco presented the project “Danzon Cubano” together with the WDR Funkhausorchester and Joo Kraus , which was performed at the Viersen Jazz Festival and was released on CD in 2019. In 2019 she performed in a duo with Omar Sosa at the Rheingau Music Festival .
