Leszek Możdżer
Leszek Możdżer (Lesław Henryk Możdżer, born March 23, 1971 in Gdansk ) is a Polish jazz pianist and composer . In Poland he is considered a talented and commercially successful jazz pianist.
Live and act
Możdżer has been playing the piano since he was five and studied piano in Gdansk. He graduated in 1996. He has been involved with jazz since he was eighteen. In 1992 he won a first prize at the Junior Jazz Festival in Cracow . He had his first national successes as a pianist in the band Miłość with Mikołaj Trzaska, among others . Since the mid-1990s, other jazz musicians have invited him to play in their bands at concerts and CD recordings. He has already played nationally with Tomasz Stańko , Michał Urbaniak , Cezary Konrad and Anna Maria Jopek , internationally with Pat Metheny , Lester Bowie , Arthur Blythe and Archie Shepp . His classical training gives him the ability to incorporate classical music into his jazz improvisation and variations. Like his improvisations on melodies by Frédéric Chopin .
He also composed music for the theater and for Polish films. He wrote the music for the production of the play Psychosis by Sarah Kane by the Polish director Grzegorz Jarzyna at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and wrote a musical version of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream , which had its world premiere at the Musical Theater in Gdynia . He also wrote music for the modern dance theater in Poznań . The French director Michale Boganim won him over for her feature film debut Wounded Earth .
In addition to working with jazz musicians, Możdżer also takes part in recordings of Polish musicians from other genres, B. the death metal band Behemoth or the hip hop artists LUC and Eldo as well as the rock band Myslovitz .
Since meeting bassist and band leader Lars Danielsson at a concert in Warsaw in 2003 , the two have continuously pursued joint projects. The result was, among other things, four albums. As a member of the Lars Danielsson - Tarantella formation , Możdżer played together with Mathias Eick (tp) and John Parricelli (g) at the JazzBaltica 2010 festival . In 2011, his tribute album Komeda reached number 1 on the Polish pop charts.
In 2013 Możdżer was awarded the Polish Order of Merit presented to him by President Bronisław Komorowski .
