Miłość ( Polish love ) was a Polish music band founded in 1988 . They are considered to be one of the most innovative Polish bands of their time. Their music was a mixture of elements from jazz , rock music , punk and other influences. To describe them, a term " Yass " invented by their leader Tymon Tymański was used, which was later applied to many other musicians and bands from Gdansk and Bydgoszcz .
history
The band was founded in 1988 as a follow-up project to the new wave group Sni Sredstvom Za Uklanianie . The founders were the later leader Ryszard "Tymon" Tymański , Mikołaj Trzaska and Jerzy Mazzoll . From the beginning, Miłość distinguished himself from the Polish jazz scene of that time and was initially not accepted by it. Rather, the role models for the young musicians were American free jazz musicians ( John Coltrane , Ornette Coleman , Art Ensemble of Chicago ). However, they let many other influences go into their music, especially elements of rock music and punk .
In 1991 Mazzoll left the group and was replaced by Leszek Możdżer , which resulted in a stronger turn to conventional mainstream jazz . Shortly afterwards, the drummer Jacek Olter joined them.
In 1992 and 1993 the group had their first successes at festivals and in 1992 recorded their first album, Miłość . The saxophonist Maciej Sikała became the fifth member of the band. During this time Miłość had the opportunity to record an album with the most famous living jazz musician in Poland, Tomasz Stańko , but this failed because Tymański demanded that his compositions should be played.
In 1994 the band worked for the first time with the famous American trumpeter Lester Bowie . They performed together several times and recorded two albums together: the live album Not Two (1995) and Talkin 'about Life and Death (1999).
In 1996 the band recorded the album Asthmatic , the title of which is an ironic allusion to one of the most important albums in Polish jazz , Astigmatic by Krzysztof Komeda .
In 2001 Jacek Olter committed suicide. His death and increasing conflicts between the band members led to the dissolution of Miłość the following year.
