Guto Bebb

Guto ap Owain Bebb (born October 9, 1968 in Wrexham ) is a Welsh Conservative Party politician . He has been a member of the House of Commons since 2010 .

Life

Education and professional career

Bebb received his education at the Sir Hugh Owen School in Caernarfon . This was followed by studies at Aberystwyth University from which he graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in history . In 1993 he founded a management consultancy . He also ran a bookstore with his wife until 2002.

Political career

Bebb originally belonged to the Plaid Cymru and was its chairman in the Caernarfon constituency , but switched to the Conservative Party in 2001 because of his Euro-skeptical views. The following year he stood for this in a by-election in the constituency of Ogmore , but only achieved 7.5% of the vote. In 2003 he entered the constituency of Conwy in the elections to the National Assembly for Wales , but was again clearly defeated. In the British general election in 2005 he ran in the constituency of Conwy , where he came in second place behind the Labor Party candidate , Betty Williams . For the British general election in 2010 , his party nominated him for the newly created constituency of Aberconwy . He prevailed with 35.8% against the second-placed candidate of the Labor Party. Since taking office he has been a member of the Welsh Affairs Select Committee , a committee of the House of Commons responsible for overseeing the Wales Office and maintaining relations with the National Assembly for Wales. He is also a member of the Audit Committee and the Expense Committee . On September 4, 2019, Bebb was expelled from the Conservative Party faction due to his parliamentary opposition to a Brexit without an EU exit agreement.

Bebb announced in July 2019 that he would not run again in the upcoming general election due to differences of opinion with Boris Johnson .

Private

Bebb was born in Wrexham. His family is originally from Bangor and Blaenau Ffestiniog . He is a grandson of the author and co-founder of Plaid Cymru , Ambrose Bebb . In 1993 he married his wife Esyllt with whom he has five children.
