Blaenau Ffestiniog is a small town in North Wales known for its narrow-gauge railway and slate quarries .
geography
Located in the mountains of Snowdonia , the town was an important business location during the heyday of the slate industry in Wales .
Today the city lives mainly from tourism. It is the center of the Snowdonia National Park . The boundaries of the park were deliberately drawn so that the city with their huge overburden hills of slate does not fall within the national park.
tourism
Major tourist attractions today include the Ffestiniog Railway to Porthmadog and the Llechwedd Slate Caverns , an old slate mine that can be visited by tourists. The Miners Tramway takes visitors to the slate mines on the steepest train in Great Britain to the underground chambers.
