Jamaram is a Munich based band that, based on the basic canon of reggae & dub , also play Ska , Latin , Pop, Balkan Beats and Afrobeat in their live shows . It was founded in 2000 by singer Tom Lugo, drummer Max Alberti and guitarist Sam Hopf. The band currently consists of eight members.

history

Jamaram took part in the international newcomer festival Emergenza in 2002 and took two first places in the preliminary rounds and second place in the final. The notoriety gained through this led to the fact that the band gave over 100 concerts in 2005 and played at several festivals such as the “Chiemsee Reggae Summer”. In 2004 Jamaram produced their first album with Kalahassi , which was released on Soulfire Artists / Rough Trade, with which they also carried out their first tour in Europe in 2005 . In May 2006 the album Ookuchaka! . For the first single “Megan” a video was made with the director JRJ Wagner and the well-known German actress Cosma Shiva Hagen . A pond in Andechs near Munich was chosen as the shooting location . In 2007 the third album Shout it from the Rooftops was created , which was released in April 2008. In December 2008 the band was on tour for three weeks and made 12 concerts in Uganda and one concert in Kenya . Invited by the Goethe Institute, the focus was on intercultural exchange. In addition to 12 concerts, the band shot a music video at Lake Victoria and visited the Rainbow House of Hope project in Kampala, which the band has supported financially since the end of 2008. The music video "Out My Window" was created during this visit. They also gave workshops for children and adults. In 2009 they released their album Live . On December 31, 2009, Jamaram played their 700th live show. In mid-May 2010, the band flew to Salvador da Bahia to get inspiration from other parts of the world. In this context, they played 6 concerts, one of which stood out in Pelorinho (Salvador da Bahia). Geronimo Santana has been holding a concert every Tuesday in the city for about 30 years, to which he always invites one or two other bands in addition to his own band. In the middle of May this band was Jamaram. In 2010 Jamaram released their fourth studio album called Jameleon .

Cooperation with the Acoustic Night Allstars

Thanks to the successful cooperation between the Culture Department of the City of Munich, the German Embassy Harare, the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) and the Goethe-Zentrum Harare / Zimbabwe German Society, Jamaram flew to Zimbabwe for an intercultural exchange project for a week in May 2012 .

During the week, the band made several appearances at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), gave workshops and attended press appointments. They got to know artists from the local music scene who had come together under the name "Acoustic Night Allstars". The joint concerts and workshops in Zimbabwe were a great success. The desire arose to go on tour together in Germany as well. In spring 2013 the time had come: the musicians from Jamaram were accompanied on their spring tour 2013 by three musicians from the Acoustic Night Allstars from Zimbabwe - Tariro neGitare, Prayersoul and Rutendo Machiridza. The joint tour took the musicians through 20 German cities, including Munich, Hamburg and Göttingen. The young and committed film production company "fits already productions" from Munich accompanied the musicians on their journey, shot several music videos with the three musicians from Zimbabwe during their stay in Germany and produced a 40-minute documentary film about the experiences of the German and Zimbabwean musicians on their journey through wintry Germany (everything can be seen on the DVD "Jamaram & Acoustic Night Allstars on tour"). The tour exceeded all expectations by far and the response from the fans was so overwhelming that the logical continuation of the action was the production of a joint album. In addition to Tariro neGitare, Prayersoul and Rutendo Machiridza, Jamaram invited the musicians Tendex, Fungai Nengare, Munya Nyamarebvu and Vee Mukarati to the studio. The joint album is titled "Heavy Heavy", which in Shona, one of the languages of Zimbabwe, means something like "Everything is good" and which became a household word in the studio during the joint work in the summer of 2014.

The musicians from Zimbabwe were “Artists in Residence” of the city of Munich during the studio recordings for the album in the summer of 2014 and lived for three months (July – September) in the Villa Waldberta, the guest house of the city of Munich, in Feldafing on the shores of Lake Starnberg .

The album was financed with the help of crowd funding with the Startnext platform .

social commitment

Jamaram has been supporting the Go Ahead! Aid organization since 2006 . through appeals for donations at concerts.

Until 2014, the group mainly financed the “Sekhethimpilo” preschool in South Africa / Gauteng, which trains children who have lost one or both parents as a result of AIDS. In 2014 the preschool was included in state funding programs and no longer needs support from Go Ahead! and Jamaram. Since then, Jamaram's donations have been flowing to a learning center in the Jozini region, South Africa.

Several donations have also been made to the Rainbow House of Hope in Kampala, Uganda. The Rainbow House of Hope is an open youth center in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, that supports socially disadvantaged children. Funding takes place through music, dance, sport and the imparting of manual skills such as tailoring or carpentry.

Since we started working with Go Ahead! In 2006, Jamaram have already acquired more than € 85,000 in donations.
