Emergenza Hamburg (2007)

The first emergence festival took place on January 8, 1992 in front of 245 guests in Rome . It was founded by various Italian bands who were looking for a way to perform. 3,000 guests came to the final in mid-1992. After growing success in Italy, the first concert abroad, in Paris , took place on January 7, 1996 . 114 bands played there over 23 days. In 1998 the Emergenza took place in 10 European countries before the leap across the Atlantic to Montreal in Canada was made in 2001 . The festival only found its way to the USA in 2004, when the time came, but five cities ( Boston , Buffalo , Chicago , Philadelphia and Washington ) and over 700 bands took part. Almost 4,000 young bands were playing in Europe at the time.

mode

The bands have the opportunity to play 25 minutes at a concert in a nearby large city. After the performance, the audience there votes which of the eight bands was the best for that evening. The bands, which can inspire the most visitors and jury members at several of these performances, go to the national finals, where they are judged by a jury . Since the 2011/2012 season, an expert jury has been active in the second round, which, together with the audience, selects the best two bands of the evening for the final.

The international final has been taking place at the Taubertal Festival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber since 2000 . The victorious band there has had a studio production lasting several weeks and a tour through the USA and Europe since 2004.

Since 2009 Emergenza has been promoting its best bands through the Emergenza Artist Pool , which arranges gigs at festivals such as Sziget or South by Southwest for selected bands.

Registration fee

Since June 28, 2015, the bands can apply to participate in the festival free of charge. Unlike in the past, there is no longer any obligation to sell tickets.

criticism

Because the bands are rated by the audience in the preliminary rounds, bands that can mobilize the largest crowd often advance. On the other hand, because viewers are allowed to vote for several bands, groups with conspicuous quality are often elected to the next round.

So far some bands, for example the Emil Bulls , Itchy Poopzkid , Rock Hard Power Spray (DK), Sincere (B), Ready, Go! (D), Lik… ed (F) received a record deal based on the Emergenza. Other bands have signed management or publishing contracts thanks to the competition, including Mr Brown (D), Für Kerstins letzte (D), Willowtree (S) and Diablo Swing Orchestra (S).

Critics cite the commercialization of the Emergenza Festival, which does not offer any real promotion of young talent. The entrance fees are relatively high (between 6 and 15 euros), but on the other hand these are the usual prices for the clubs where Emergenza hosts its concerts.

Since the audience also decides in the preliminary rounds, the bands are interested in mobilizing their fans and motivating them to buy the tickets. This motivates the musicians to attract as many spectators as possible to the concerts, which in turn guarantees the organizer a monetary profit. The bands themselves can also earn a fee. Critics see this as the greatest mistake of the Emergenza and some bands are boycotting the contest because they no longer see the music as the focus of interest.

Interesting bands that did not get the necessary votes from the audience can win a place for the further rounds via so-called wild cards (which are awarded by a technical jury), but this wild card is rarely used.
