Emil Bulls is an alternative metal - band from Munich . She plays two guitars, bass, drums and singer / guitar in the line-up.

history

Lead singer Christoph "Christ" von Freydorf at the Rockharz 2015

In 1995 the former monastery students Christoph von Freydorf (vocals and guitar) and Stefan Finauer (drums, replaced by Fabian Füss in 2003) together with von Freydorf's church choir friend James Richardson (bass) founded the band Emil Bulls in the Bavarian town of Hohenschäftlarn near Munich. The name, it is officially called, is derived from the children's film of the same name. Stephan Karl Moik (guitar) and Franz Wickenhäuser (guitar, replaced by Christian Schneider in 1999) joined them.

In 1996 the first CD Red Dick's Potatoe Garden was recorded on their own. Today it is a rarity due to the small number of copies. The following year, the Emil Bulls applied to the Emergenza junior competition and came third in the European standings. For the competition, they hired DJ Paul Rzyttka (known as DJ Zamzoe) to do the electronic effects. After the competition, DJ Zamzoe became a permanent member of the band. A long period of live performances followed. In 1998 the Feek Sick EP was released . In 2000 the album Monogamy was released on the Munich indie label Oh My Sweet Records, which was only available on the Internet and at concerts. Thereupon Island Records became aware of the album and signed the band. That same year, the whole was Monogamy repertoire plus three new songs (including a duet with Olli, the singer of a Surge , which was once the Emil Bulls tour took) under the direction of the Guano Apes -Produzenten Wolfgang Stach added . The result was christened Angel Delivery Service and was already sold out in October 2001, after which a new edition was published. This was accompanied by the cover version of the A-ha classic Take on Me , which had been performed live by the Emil Bulls for years and was released for the first time on CD.

Before the fourth album Porcelain , which was published by the Universal branch Motor, hit stores in May 2003, the band played 129 concerts in clubs and at major festivals such as Rock am Ring between June 2001 and August 2002 . In August 2003 drummer Stefan "Fini" Finauer announced his departure from the band on the Emil Bulls homepage. He wanted to start studying in Munich and thus choose the "safe path". This is followed by a tour of ( Canada and the USA ).

On June 20, 2005 The Southern Comfort was released by Pirate Records and also by the American label Track1. For the following live performances, however, the Emil Bulls had to do without the man at the mixer, because DJ Zamzoe had announced a live abstinence. In the future, he only wants to support the band in the studio and otherwise go his own way in the music industry at Zebra Productions. On the DVD Paranoid by Michael Mittermeier , the song Revenge appears in the stage show, in "At Fleischberg's" it underlines the DVD menu. Apart from that, The Southern Comfort was released in France in 2006.

In February 2007 the sixth album, The Life Acoustic , was released, which was recorded unplugged and live in a beer tent in Pullach in the summer of 2006 on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of the community.

The sixth studio album The Black Path was released on April 4, 2008 by Drakkar . It was recorded in the Horus Sound Studio in Hanover together with producer Benny Richter ( Caliban , Krypteria , Butterfly Coma) and sound engineer and mixer Jakob Bernhart. The single The Most Evil Spell was released as a free download on Myspace .

At the beginning of 2009 Chrissy Schneider left the band and was replaced by Andy Bock, who previously played in the befriended band From Constant Visions. The album Phoenix was released on September 25, 2009 , again on the Drakkar label. The first single Here Comes the Fire was available for free download on the official band homepage from August 3rd. In September 2009 the video for When God Was Sleeping was released . In 2010 the live album The Feast was released. It includes a live DVD and the accompanying audio CD with the live tracks. The concert was filmed in the Munich cultural center Backstage in winter 2009.

On September 30, 2011, the eighth album called Oceanic was released . The first single Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea from this album has been available as a free download on the band's homepage since August 15th. In addition, on 14.9. released the music video for the song The Jaws of Oblivion .

At the end of the X-MAS BASH 2013 on December 21, 2013 in Backstage / Munich, the band announced the release of the album Sacrifice to Venus , which was released on August 8, 2014.

The album Kill Your Demons was released in autumn 2017. Videos for the title track Kill Your Demons and The Ninth Wave were released beforehand .

style

The Emil Bulls' style is characterized above all by hard guitar playing and the singer's often unusually melodic singing. The songs often alternate between very hard and quieter passages.

Due to the many musical influences of the band, it is very difficult to assign them to a genre. The influences range from pop music like Sade or a-ha to various rock and metal music like stoner rock or thrash metal . In the days of Angel Delivery Service , they were often assigned to Nu Metal, but the band still prefers terms such as crossover rock or alternative metal . The album The Black Path is harder again and shows a development of the band towards Metal / Hardcore , to which bassist James Richardson said in an interview: “If that is the case, it was unwanted. On the album we were more inspired by Slayer and Machine Head than by Caliban and the like. ”In addition, drummer Fabian Füss stated that“ they actually completely lack hardcore roots and the like ”.

The lyrics are usually very personal. Typical rock 'n' roll topics such as excessive alcohol consumption or sex , but also love and hate, are often dealt with. Many texts contain allusions or quotes from classic films and novels such as Scarface , A Clockwork Orange , The Godfather , Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Mulholland Drive .
