Elliott Murphy (born March 16, 1949 in New York ) is an American singer and songwriter.

Life

Murphy grew up in a wealthy family in New York. He started playing in bands as a teenager. In the late 1960s he went to Europe with his brother Matthew. Here they lived as street musicians, with Elliott writing the songs. In 1972 he played a small role in Fellini's Roma .

Shortly thereafter, he returned to New York and formed a new band called Aquashow . This was named after an amusement park that belonged to his father. In 1973 he released the band's self-titled debut album. Elliott had little commercial success with his albums, even if he was hailed as the "new Dylan" by the rock press. He played in trendy New York clubs like Max's Kansas City and in galleries so that he earned a cult reputation. He played with artists close to Lou Reed and Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers , such as bassist Ernie Brooks. With the New York Dolls , the Patti Smith Group and others he formed the New York Art Rock scene, where he appeared as a classic singer / songwriter with an accompanying group.

Well -known musicians such as Phil Collins , Mick Taylor and Bruce Springsteen as well as the boys' choir of St Paul's Cathedral are represented on his album Just a Story from America , recorded in London in 1976 .

Murphy released the EP Affairs with six songs in 1980 on his own label. Since that time he has been touring Europe regularly and finally moved to France in 1990 , where he had already signed with New Rose Records in 1985 . The album Party Girls / Broken Poets was nominated for the New York Music Award. Milwaukee (1986) was produced by Jerry Harrison ( Talking Heads ). With Hot Point (1989) he released a live album, with "special guest" Chris Spedding as lead guitarist.

On his debut album for Blue Rose Records Selling The Gold (1995) Murphy was accompanied by Andy Newmark ( Roxy Music ), Chucho Merchan (studio musician of the Eurythmics ) and Luis Jardim (studio musician of the Rolling Stones ). "Special guests" on the album were Bruce Springsteen , at whose European concerts he also appeared as a surprise guest, and the Violent Femmes .

He recorded the album "La Terre Commune" as a duo with Iain Matthews , who was also under contract with Blue Rose . With the French guitarist Olivier Durand he also appears live as a duo or supplemented by other musicians in groups, giving over 100 concerts per year.

Elliott Murphy published short stories and a novel ( Cold and Electric ). He is married to Françoise Viallon-Murphy and has a son with her.
