Oliver Mally , artist name "Sir" Oliver Mally (born February 6, 1966 in Wagna , Styria ) is an Austrian blues musician and singer-songwriter . On the stage he mostly presents his own compositions and also pieces from the various traditions of the blues.

Life

Mally got his first guitar at the age of 15, and then learned to play on a self-taught basis . As influences, especially for his own playing on the electric guitar , he names blues musicians like Albert King , Buddy Guy , John Lee Hooker , BB King and Albert Collins , in songwriting Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, for example .

In 1990 Mally founded the band "Sir" Oliver Mally's Blues Distillery. He spent the following years touring both nationally and internationally. He played with artists such as Louisiana Red , Steve James, Doug MacLeod , John Mooney, Larry Garner , Sugar Blue , among others . From the late 1990s, the acoustic guitar increasingly replaced the electric guitar as his preferred instrument.

In addition to his solo career, he also appeared in various duo formions with Martin Gasselsberger, Martin Moro , Hubert Hofherr and Peter Schneider. Previous projects were The Low Fi Kings, Sidesteps and Nu 'Yard.

In 1999 he won the critics poll of the music magazine Concerto for the first time as "Best Blues Roots Artist" in Austria, with which he has received several awards since then, as well as in the categories "Best Album String / Song" and "Best Singer / Songwriter" (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012). The album A Hard Night's Day by The Low-Fi Kings featuring "Sir" Oliver Mally was voted number 1 in the 2006 bluesnews poll in the category "CDs national". With the album Steppin 'Out he was among the nominees in the category "Jazz / Blues / Folk National Album of the Year" of the Amadeus Austrian Music Awards 2007 .

In November 2015 Mally released his 24th album with Shapeshifter . At the same time, the Blues Distillery was dissolved after 25 years or renamed "Sir" Oliver Mally's Nu 'Yard with Alex Meik on bass. Several albums followed.

Further honors

  • 2017 Awarded the Gold Medal of Honor of the State of Styria for his services as a musician and organizer.
  • The International Songwriting Competition (ISC) from the USA selected Devil's gone fishing from the album Uncut (text and music: Oliver Mally) as one of the 16 finalists in the 2018 Bluessong category.

Trivia

In 2013 he was threatened by the fashion label s.Oliver to surrender his domain sir-oliver.com, against which he successfully defended himself.
