Aufputz is the name for tufts, tassels and fringes made of animal hair or wool that were attached to hunting and war weapons from the 16th to 18th centuries . Mostly they were attached to the following weapons :

The tassels served as an ornament . An additional function of the tassels was to keep blood away from the gun handles. Blood on the handles could affect the grip and thus the possible uses of the weapon.
