history

The company was founded in 1774. At that time, the seat was still in Greven , as the inland port for the Münsterland was located there on the Ems . The company initially traded in colonial goods . In 1825 it opened a new warehouse and office in Greven , before moving its headquarters to Münster in 1883. The reasons for this move were the connection to the railroad and the planned construction of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the port in Münster .

In 1931 the company of the Terfloth family had to file for bankruptcy due to illiquidity . However, the then managing director Fritz Terfloth was able to take over part of the warehouse. His apprentice at the time, Egbert Snoek , drove overland for Terfloth and sold the supplies. The company was re-established by Fritz Terfloth from the capital raised. Snoek was initially appointed as authorized signatory, from 1943 Egbert Snoek became an equal partner, the company was now called Terfloth & Snoek .

In 1947, after the end of the Second World War, the company opened its first food wholesale business on the Loddenheide in Münster. In 1952 it was the first company in Germany to introduce the concentration of orders in wholesale, also known as the “ratio system”, from which the group's name was ultimately derived. With the opening of the wholesale market in Bochum in 1957, Ratio was the first food wholesaler in Europe to introduce self-service with immediate cash payment, the so-called Cash & Carry System (C&C), which was to be the model for many other wholesalers. With the opening of Ratio Markt Münster in 1963, end consumers were also able to buy from the company for the first time. In 2001 Ratio achieved sales of almost 1 billion euros with 2,900 employees.

Heinrich Rüschoff was still co-managing director in 2004. The annual turnover in the 2006 financial year was around 829 million euros gross with 2,459 employees. Ratio includes a plot of land of 916,000 m², 95% of which is owned and a building area of 365,000 m².

On September 29, 2010, Ratio Handel GmbH & Co. KG and the Edeka Group agreed to take over 19 of all 22 stores by Edeka - subject to approval by the antitrust authorities. While Edeka wanted to take over all employees in the stores it had bought, Ratio 170 of 200 jobs were "cut in a socially acceptable manner" at the corporate headquarters. Two months earlier, in July 2010, Hendrik Snoek had vehemently opposed sales speculation. There are no plans to sell at this point in time. As a reason for the sale, Snoek cited the low chances of being able to exist in the market over the long term. The differences in turnover between the companies (ratio: approx. 600 million euros compared with the competition in the double-digit billions) are too great.

On September 30, 2019, it was announced that the four Ratio wholesale stores will be sold by Edeka Hessenring. The two Ratio wholesale stores in Bielefeld and Bochum will be transferred to EFS Edeka Foodservice on January 18, 2020. The two Ratio wholesale stores in Hagen and Ratingen will be operated under the name Handelshof from February 1, 2020.
