Offheim as a district of Limburg

Offheim is a district of the district town of Limburg an der Lahn in the central Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg .

Geographical location

Offheim is about three kilometers north of Limburg on a small hill, from which one has a view of the Limburg basin , the Westerwald and the Taunus up to the Großer Feldberg . Offheim is connected to the federal highway 49 , popularly known as the " Lange Meil ", running east of the town . The A3 runs south past the place.

The roughly square-shaped district borders in the north on Ahlbach and further clockwise on Dehrn , Dietkirchen , the core city of Limburg, Elz and Niederhadamar . The settlement itself is at an altitude of 155 to 185 meters. In the northeast the district rises up to 215 meters, in the northwest it reaches its lowest point at 135 meters on the Urselbach. With the exception of the northern edge, the district has only slight differences in altitude. The district consists mainly of agricultural land. Just north of the village is a small piece of forest, the "Offheimer Wäldchen", which also contains a disused garbage dump .

history

etymology

The name Offheim, whose old form used to be Ufheim or Uffheym, means "high-altitude place". The name actually applies, as Offheim is located on a small hill and towers over all the villages and towns in the area.

Furthermore, the end syllable "-heim" indicates a place founded at the time of the Franconian conquest in the 5th – 7th centuries . Century, which, however, cannot be documented.

Another approach assumes that Offheim got its name from the Ubier tribe , who at that time maintained a settlement in the Offheim district. The prefix would have developed from the Celtic / Gallic “ubinum” (Ubier settlement) via the Germanic “úpenum” and the Franconian / Old High German “úfheim” to the current place name.

timeline

Rochus Chapel

In 1217, Offheim was first mentioned in a list of goods from the Eberbach monastery in the Rheingau . A “Rouger de Uffheim” is mentioned there as a witness for a property sale in Hadamar. Offheim was the seat of the noble family "von Uf (f) heim", who had their "Od" or farm in the immediate vicinity of today's parish church. The village is much older, however. This is demonstrated in excavation work at the site of the company "iron Fischer" discovered finds , by which you can connect to an earlier settlement. It is assumed that Offheim is more than 1000 years old, which is also indicated by the village name. South of the Rochus Chapel, a shallow grave from the Latène period was found during road works in 1963 , in which three arm or leg rings made of bronze were discovered as grave goods. Unfortunately, the grave was destroyed during the work. At the northern edge of the district, during excavations in 2006/07 in the course of the construction work for the gas pipeline 83, the remains of a barrow and an urnfield- era pit complex were discovered, from which the remains of a Mondidol were recovered.

Field cross on the Offheim area

In the middle of the 12th century, a chapel in Romanesque style was built, the associated tower has been preserved to this day and is considered the village's landmark . Gerhard von Offheim died in 1372, and because none of his sons had offspring, the family of von Offheim and Enolf von Offheim died out after 1421. The village came into the possession of those von Hoenberg / Hömberg, who in 1487 transferred the chapel, which had also been acquired, to the Wilhelmitenkloster in Limburg. A small Vespers picture and also the 1496 cast, inscribed Annaglocke, which today still calls the citizens of Offheim to worship, come from this time .

In 1582 the first school was built in Offheim, where the sexton initially taught the students. In 1589 Offheim, like the entire Principality of Nassau, became Calvinist. As already in 1575 raged in 1598 in the region, the plague , was largely spared from the Offheim; the place Kreuch between Offheim and Limburg fell desolate . In gratitude, after the last plague epidemic in the region, which was rampant around 1680, the Rochus Chapel was built, which was replaced in 1903 by a neo-Romanesque new building, today's chapel.

At the turn of the 17th century there were numerous lawsuits against alleged witches in the community . In two waves of trials in 1589 and 1618 at least five women were tried for sorcery.

In the Thirty Years War Offheim was attacked by the Swedes and committed to labor . During this time, the Offheimers suffered greatly from their occupiers and the population became impoverished. Until 1620 Offheim belonged to the County of Nassau-Diez and then to the line of the Count and Prince of Nassau-Hadamar , whose founder was Johann Ludwig . He converted to Catholicism again in 1629, which means Offheim also became Catholic again.

Today 486 inhabitants are Protestant , 1612 are Catholic , and 550 belong to another religion . (As of December 2002)

After the French Revolution , Offheim was the theater of the First Coalition War (1792–1797). During this time the village was badly devastated by the revolutionary troops.

In 1806 Nassau-Orange , and with it Offheim, came under French rule. The place was the southernmost settlement of the Grand Duchy of Berg , which was ruled by Napoleon's brother-in-law Joachim Murat . In November 1813, the Prussian field marshal Blücher presumably stayed in Offheim, who drove the French out with his troops. A street in Offheim is named after him. In 1815 Offheim came to the Duchy of Nassau and from 1866 to Prussia . In 1858 the school on Backhausstrasse was replaced by a new building. In 1879 Offheim became an independent parish. In 1974 the children moved to what is now the primary school. The old school on Backhausstrasse was demolished in 1975. The neo-Romanesque church, consecrated in 1896, was demolished in 1970 and replaced by the current one.

From 1967 to 1979, in the area of the Offheimer Wäldchen, a former garbage dump for household waste was expanded into a landfill for industrial waste, which made national headlines because of the disposal of highly toxic substances and a fire.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , Offheim was incorporated into the city of Limburg on July 1, 1974 by state law .

In 2017, Offheim celebrated its 800th anniversary with an extensive festival week and other activities.

Territorial history and administration

The following list gives an overview of the territories in which Offheim was located and the administrative units to which it was subordinate:

"The Offemer Bears"

How the Offheimers got their joke name:

In the 19th century, many gypsies roamed the country. Some of them had carried trained animals, such as dancing bears , with them. During this time, an Offheimer visited the inn on the Alte Lahnbrücke in Limburg. There it was said that a bear ran away from the gypsies and was supposed to be in the vicinity. The man from Offheim drank courage and made his way home late at night. On his way home he suddenly saw the said bear. Filled with fear, he ran as fast as his feet would carry him to Offheim. There his experience spread like wildfire. The citizens of Offheim quickly armed themselves with everything they had on hand, for example pitchforks, axes and scythes. When the brave troop arrived at the place where the big bear supposedly stood, all they found was an old tree stump. The misty night and the schnapps the Offheimer had drunk led to this mix-up.

Since that event, the Offheimers have been called "bears".

The one from Offheim

In 1217, Ruocger von Offheim, the lower aristocratic family Derer von Offheim, was vouched for for the first time . For 1278 a Rudiger von Offheim is recorded as the owner of a Diezer castle fief in Dehrn . In a Dietkirch document from 1098, a "smoker" is mentioned, who could be an early member of the von Offheim family. In addition to Dehrn, today's Dornburg district of Thalheim was one of the family's main holdings. Other goods were in Hadamar and Niedertiefenbach. The last mention of an Enolf von Offheim dates back to 1423. Shortly thereafter, the sex, at least in the male line, must have died out.
