Staffel as a district of Limburg

Staffel is a district of the district town of Limburg an der Lahn in the central Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg . It borders the core city of Limburg to the northwest and is the fifth largest of the eight districts in terms of population.

geography

Staffel lies northwest of the core city of Limburg and is separated from it by the Lahn and from the Limburg bridge suburb in the east by the Elbbach . To the north, the Autobahn 3 and the ICE high-speed route Cologne – Rhein / Main Staffel delimit the neighboring municipality of Elz . West of Staffel is the Rhineland-Palatinate Gückingen . Federal road 8 runs through the village . The eastern part of the town is occupied by an industrial and commercial area, the largest of which is a former Buderus plant (now Meierguss Limburg GmbH ) with its own plant fire brigade . The tracks of the Oberwesterwald and Unterwesterwaldbahn with the Staffel station also run to the east . The central square of the old town center is the school square, where the former school, the former town hall and the Protestant church are located.

The place itself extends from the banks of the Lahn at a height of about 110 meters to about 145 meters in the northwest of the settlement. On the western edge of the district, the landscape rises in a further clear terrain level up to 180 meters. In addition to the settlement area, the district mainly consists of the Lahn floodplain and agricultural areas.

history

The name “Staffel” is derived from the Middle High German “stapfel”, which means “level”. Presumably the description refers to the step-shaped hill north of the Lahn, on which the place lies.

The first written mention of Staffel dates back to November 6, 1195. At that time, Emperor Heinrich IV settled a dispute between Worms Bishop Heinrich and Count Walram I of Nassau . One of the 20 guarantors mentioned in the document was Dietrich von Staffel.

A fortification with fences and a drop gate is mentioned for 1367. Staffel initially belonged to the County of Diez as an imperial fiefdom and passed to the House of Nassau when the Diez Counts died out in 1386 . Soon, however, the property split between different Nassau lines, the lords of Eppstein , those of Königstein, von Katzenelnbogen and Kurtrier . Often parts of the place were mortgaged. The competent court and official seat was mostly in Diez. The feudal sovereignty passed from the empire to Kurtrier in 1441.

A bridge over the Elbbach for traffic from Limburg in the direction of Westerwald is documented from 1447. It was renewed in 1537 and replaced by a slightly offset new building in 1855.

In the Middle Ages, in addition to the Oberstaffel, from which today's town developed, there was also a Niederstaffel, which was "a rifle shot away" in the direction of Diez and was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War , possibly during a comprehensive pillage of both places in 1626 by imperial troops. Another desert , Scherlingen, is documented as an inhabited place until 1347.

For 1633 a "common house", probably the administrative seat of the mayor , is guaranteed. In 1742 half of the season burned down. From 1743 Staffel was again under a unified sovereignty in the Principality of Orange-Nassau , which in 1806 became part of the Duchy of Nassau . On July 1, 1816 Staffel was assigned to the Nassau Office of Limburg. With the regional reform in Hesse , Staffel became a district of Limburg on July 1, 1974.

Staffel did not have its own church for a long time. The residents attended church services in Limburg and mostly also used the local cemeteries. For the Protestant relay, Diez was initially not only the administrative seat but also the church seat. By 1671 at the latest, the majority of the population was reformed . In 1683 the first church was consecrated, which had been built with the support of Princess Albertine Agnes von Nassau-Diez. There was a separate pastor from 1701. In September 1967 the consecration of today's Catholic Church took place. The school location was initially also Diez. By 1697 at the latest there was a separate school in Staffel. A Jewish cemetery, presumably for the Jewish community of Limburg, was located in the Staffeler district.

In addition to arable farming, wine was also grown in the Staffeler district in the Middle Ages and early modern times . However, this culture disappeared entirely in the 17th century. Numerous bourgeois and aristocratic residents of Limburg had gardens and orchards in the neighboring Staffel. Until 1774 there was a common marrow forest with Gückingen . After the connection to the railway in 1870, a lime works was built in 1901 and the "Karlshütte" in 1900, which was sold to the Buderus foundry company in 1907 . Although Limburg was an electoral “foreign country”, the citizens of Staffel had the privilege of being able to trade with Limburg without paying taxes. In 1731 there was a border dispute in which a Nassau musketeer was shot dead by citizens of Limburg at Staffel.

The population censuses show 28 men in the village for 1528, and a total of 30 families for 1612. In 1660 there are 77 inhabitants, 1750 of 136 inhabitants in 45 houses and 1812 of 342 inhabitants.

On June 6, 1961 Staffel had 2086 inhabitants, on May 27, 1970 there were 2387 inhabitants.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , Staffel was incorporated into the city of Limburg on July 1, 1974 by virtue of state law .

The von Staffel

Staffel house on Limburg Cathedral Square, originally owned by the von Staffel family

Staffel was the original seat of the regionally important knight family von Staffel. Her property included the Balduinstein castles , Falkenstein Castle in the Taunus from 1517 and half of the Nievern rule from 1431 and the entire rule from 1497 . The old vicariate opposite the Limburg Cathedral was originally a permanent house of the von Staffel family. In addition, there was a tower on Burgberg in Nassau, the Niederburg near Balduinstein and a permanent house in Fachbach (none of them exist anymore today). In the Arnstein Monastery , the monastery church was fundamentally rebuilt after 1359 under Abbot Wilhelm von Staffel.

The first mention of Staffel from 1195 is also that of the Staffel house. From various sources it can be concluded that the family already had its seat under Dietrich's father Anselm as well as under his not known father in Staffel. In the early phase, the men from the Staffel house almost exclusively had the first name Heinrich. The family's coat of arms showed a mostly gold and occasionally silver Nassau lion on a blue shield with small gold crosses.

Initially, the family seems to have been Ministeriale of the Counts of Nassau . As early as the middle of the 13th century, however, family members also appeared as electoral officials . Later they are also guaranteed in Katzenelnbogischen and Kurmainzischen , but hardly in Nassau services. With the general ousting of nobles from administrative offices by bourgeois lawyers, the last bailiff from the von Staffel house appeared in the middle of the 16th century.

The younger branch of the family moved its headquarters to Lorch am Rhein , where the male line died out in 1505. Most of his property, including a large farm in Staffel, passed to the von Stein family of imperial barons . The older line of those von Staffel had their headquarters at Balduinstein Castle. In 1522 it was first guaranteed that the family had meanwhile claimed membership of the imperial knighthood. From the late 16th century onwards, in a phase of guardianship, the staffel property disintegrated, so that in the end little more than Balduinstein remained. As the last representative of the von Staffel family, Philipp Adolf died as canon in Mainz in 1683 .
