Swell:

The Altenbeken – Kreiensen railway is part of the former long-distance connection from the Ruhr area via Altenbeken , Ottbergen , Holzminden , Kreiensen and Seesen towards Berlin . The former double-track main railway line is now operated as a single track east of Ottbergen. It leads through the Egge Mountains , continues along the Weser Valley south of Höxter, crosses it and then leads along the northern edge of the Solling .

The section in North Rhine-Westphalia up to and including Holzminden is also known as the Eggebahn .

history

The route from Altenbeken to Höxter was opened on October 1, 1864 by the Royal Westphalian Railway Company , the connection to the Braunschweigische Südbahn ( Duke Braunschweigische Staatseisenbahn ) Holzminden – Kreiensen– Braunschweig on October 10, 1865. In order to stay in the Braunschweig area, the city of Einbeck was bypassed with two tunnels and a long incline. Originally, the line was intended as a long-distance connection from the Ruhr area to Braunschweig and Berlin. The area east of Ottbergen (Höxter) remained secondary, however, as it is steeply inclined and after 1866 it was no longer necessary to bypass the Kingdom of Hanover . The section from Altenbeken to Ottbergen became an important west-east connection to Göttingen , Halle (Saale) and Leipzig , with continuation via the Solling Railway and the southern Harz line . Due to the division of Germany after 1945, the route lost its importance over the decades, as the traffic flows shifted more from north to south. The most important structure of the Eggebahn is the 1631 m long Rehberg tunnel near Altenbeken.

Even in the 1980s there were continuous express trains with through coaches that were separated in Altenbeken and on which one coach drove towards Höxter. In the 1990s, through trains to Nordhausen in Thuringia were also run on the line to Ottbergen . The partially continuous operation Paderborn – Holzminden – Kreiensen ended with the handover to the NordWestBahn in December 2003. Until then, the route book number 355 was valid for the entire route to Kreiensen. After the renewed tender of the local transport company for the timetable change in December 2013, the NordWestBahn is also in operation of the Holzminden – Kreiensen section taken over. Since then, the trains have been running mostly continuously. The two route sections are also listed together in the timetable under number 404.

Today the line is two-track from Altenbeken to Ottbergen and between Stadtoldendorf and Vorwohle . Since October 2008 it has been remote-controlled from an electronic signal box in Göttingen.

Service offer

Regional train Ottbergen – Kreiensen:
Class 614 painted in pop colors in the mid-1990s at Ottbergen station

Between December 2003 and December 2013, local traffic on the route in Holzminden was divided into two sections. Between Paderborn and Holzminden on the RB 84 "Egge-Bahn", which was operated by the NordWestBahn every hour. The line was tied through in Paderborn via the RB 74 " Senne-Bahn " to Bielefeld . To the east of Holzminden, DB Regio operated with class 628 railcars until December 2005, later with LINT railcars every two hours with individual repeater trains. Most connections continued until December 2005 on the Braunschweig – Kreiensen railway to Braunschweig. With a reorganization of the line concept in the Harz-Weser region, the connection from Seesen to Bad Harzburg was relocated.

With the timetable change on December 15, 2013, both lines were combined as part of the OWL diesel network to form the RB 84 Paderborn – Ottbergen – Kreiensen line and taken over by the NordWestBahn . The line continues to run every hour in the Paderborn – Holzminden section. The section east of Holzminden is only operated every two hours with individual amplifiers. Local rail passenger transport is carried out by NordWestBahn , which uses Talent railcars for speeds of up to 120 km / h; the route east of Altenbeken allows mostly 100 km / h. The cruising speed is 66 km / h.

In December 2015, a wing train concept with the lines RB 84 Kreiensen – Holzminden – Paderborn and RB 85 Ottbergen – Göttingen was introduced in Ottbergen. Passengers can then travel to Paderborn from both Göttingen and Kreiensen without having to change trains. In order to implement the measure, the Höxter-Ottbergen train station first had to be rebuilt and a passenger system and corresponding track connections built. The implementation of these measures began in September 2014 as part of the “Modernization Offensive 2” (MOF 2).

future

In the local traffic plan of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) the establishment of stations in Höxter-Corvey and Paderborn-Rosentor is planned. The NWL intends to shorten the travel time on the route in order to better integrate the line into the Altenbeken junction. So currently the connection in Altenbeken between RB 84 and RB 89 only works from the direction of Warburg. Conversely, the minimum transfer time in the direction of Warburg is undercut by a few minutes, so that this connection is not included in the timetable information.

As part of the investment plan " Lower Saxony is on the train III ", the Holzminden and Stadtoldendorf traffic stations are to be rebuilt. Holzminden is to get elevators as part of the renovation, which would make the station completely barrier-free. However, the work will not start before 2019. Furthermore, the establishment or reactivation of a stop in Lenne is being considered in the long term .

The Lower Saxony regional transport company (LNVG) intends to increase the number of local transport services on the Lower Saxony section of the route to an hourly rate and at the same time to establish optimal connections in Kreiensen to Hanover, Göttingen and Bad Harzburg. The implementation is currently failing due to the single-track infrastructure and the unsuitable alternative points. The introduction of an hourly service will drag on at least until 2025, since in addition to the infrastructure measures, vehicles with higher drive power are required, which can only be purchased after the transport contract with NordWestBahn has expired. In terms of infrastructure, an additional alternative point between Arholzen and Bevern, as well as a route modernization between Höxter and Altenbeken is necessary. This is the only way to optimally design the connections in Paderborn, Altenbeken and Kreiensen.

Since the Paderborn - Ottbergen section exceeded a cross-sectional demand of 2000 passengers per day in 2018, the NWL plans to increase the offer to half-hourly during rush hour in accordance with the specifications of its local transport plan. The additional trains are to run to Holzminden, as the further section is only slightly below the required number of passengers and the State Garden Show will take place in Höxter in 2023. Since between Ottbergen and Holzminden only crossings at the no longer served Höxter train station are possible, it is not possible to offer half-hourly intervals that are precise to the minute. The clock shift in front of Altenbeken will also be increased, as the route was previously occupied by lines S 5 and RB 72. The NWL sees the possibility of introducing the compressor trips from the timetable change in December 2020 if the three additional vehicles can be procured by then. A full-day consolidation of the offer is planned for the State Garden Show 2023.

Freight transport

The local freight traffic is currently (2012) largely suspended. The open loading track in Stadtoldendorf was put back into operation in 2012 at the instigation of the Lower Saxony State Forests in order to be able to load wood, but this is only used sporadically. There is also an unloading track for Rea gypsum for the local gypsum works to the west of Stadtoldendorf . It is currently operated by DB Cargo three times a week. The trains are hauled by class 261 diesel locomotives . Due to the weight of the trains and the long slope at Greene one is mostly sliding locomotive of the 212 series of Ilmebahn carried. In addition, an oil train drives to Brakel about every two weeks to deliver to a tank farm located there. This is currently being served by EVB / MWB .
