description

Construction drawing of the viaduct

The viaduct was built between 1862 and 1864 as part of the construction of the double- track Altenbeken – Kreiensen railway line and is still in use today. The line was opened on October 10, 1865. It was a continuation of the Braunschweigische Südbahn of the Duke Braunschweigische Staatseisenbahn in the Ruhr area . The Duchy of Braunschweig commissioned the railway and tunnel builder Franz von Rziha with the construction of the viaduct to cross a valley cut . The viaduct as a cuboid construction made of dolomite rock from the Selter ridge has a height of 31 meters and a length of 97 meters. It is an 8.5 meter wide arched bridge with eight semicircular arches of equal size, each with a span of 8.5 meters. Circular blind openings in the seven pillars indicate bridge eyes. At the top the bridge is closed off by a round arch frieze .

Today the B 64 passes under the viaduct. The original massive side parapet was probably dismantled in 1966 when the bridge was replaced with concrete. In 2014, Deutsche Bahn renewed the railing on the railway bridge.

The viaduct, which has been a listed building since 1988, is unique in northern Germany . It shapes the landscape and, in addition to the Ippenser and Naenser tunnels, the outstanding artificial structure in the Kreiensen - Holzminden section. In today's Lower Saxony, only the Werra valley bridge Münden and the Fulda valley bridge Kragenhof had larger dimensions for railway constructions .
