Matthias Friedrich Watson

Matthias Friedrich Watson ( Latvian Matīss Frīdrihs Vatsons ; born January 18, 1732 in Königsberg , † March 8, 1805 in Mitau ) was a German educator.

Life

Origin and family

Watsons came from an originally Scottish family. His parents were the Prussian war and domain councilor Matthias Watson and Johanna Albertine, née. from Sommerfeld. He was married to Agathe Dullo († 1801) since 1772, with whom he had three daughters and two sons, including the pastor Karl Friedrich Watson (1777-1826).

Career

Watson attended the Collegium Fridericianum from 1738 to 1746 and then studied from 1746 to 1752 at the Albertus University of Königsberg . He completed his training there in 1753 as Mag. Phil. from, but matriculated in Frankfurt / Oder that same year , further studies in Berlin , Göttingen and Kassel followed.

From 1756 to 1759 he taught as an associate professor for poetry at the Albertus University in Königsberg. In 1759 he moved to Mitau, where he was rector of the large city school until 1774 and again from 1781 to 1804 . From 1774 to 1805 he taught the Latin language and literature at the Academia Petrina in Mitau.

Watson was a member of the Royal German Society and editor of Mitauschen Zeitung . He has written several essays, essays and speeches in Latin and German.
