Friedrich Konrad Gadebusch (born January 29, 1719 in Altefähr , Rügen ; † June 20, 1788 in Dorpat , Livonia ) was a German-Baltic historian and lawyer .

Life

Friedrich Konrad Gadebusch studied law , history and philosophy at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald and the Royal Albertus University of Königsberg before he came to Livonia in 1748 as a private tutor. In Dorpat he held various court offices from 1750, was a member of the Law Commission in Moscow from 1767 as a deputy of the city and from 1771 to 1783 mayor of justice.

Gadebusch is considered the father of modern Livonia historiography. From the years 1749 to 1783, almost 1,500 documents and letters have come down to us. Most of his correspondents came from the three Baltic states, but also from Germany, Sweden, Poland, Russia and Scotland. After his death they came into the possession of his son-in-law Johann Martin Hehn . They have been in the Latvian State Historical Archives in Riga since 1935. In 1940, the correspondence was filmed by the German Archives Commission as part of the resettlement of the Baltic Germans. The films are now part of the Herder Institute's (DSHI) document collection.
