Johann Friedrich von Recke (born August 1, 1764 in Mitau ; † September 13, 1846 ibid) was a Baltic German archaeologist, literary historian and collector.

Life

Johann Friedrich von Recke was the son of the Mitau merchant and mayor Johann Reck. He attended the Great City School (1774–1779) and the Academia Petrina (1779–1781) in Mitau. In 1781 he began to study law, history, archeology and philosophy at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1781 he became a member of the influential Göttingen student order "ZN" at about the same time as Piter Poel ; Piter Poel mentions him in his memoirs. After a stay in Paris, he returned to Mitau in 1785.

Supported by Duke Peter von Kurland , he had worked for the archives and feudal secretary since 1787; the following year the duke gave him this office. Subsequently, from 1796 to 1801, he was secretary of the Courland government administration , then, from 1801 to 1826, councilor of the Courland Chamber of Commerce, from 1816 with the title of a councilor. In 1823 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1824 he became a member of the Russian State Council and was awarded the Order of Vladimir 4th class . In 1824 and 1825 Recke served as deputy lieutenant governor. In 1826 he was dismissed from the civil service for embezzling a subordinate employee, but after a few years he was rehabilitated and retired.

This gave him the freedom to publish the General Lexicon of Writers and Scholars of the Provinces of Livonia, Esthland and Courland from 1827 together with Karl Eduard von Napiersky . He was a co-founder of the Courland Society for Literature and Art as well as the Courland Provincial Museum and published the magazine weekly entertainments for lovers of German reading in Russia , which appeared from 1805 to 1807 .
