Gustav Poel (politician)

Gustav Paul Poel (born November 17, 1804 in Altona , † April 16, 1895 in Trenthorst ) was a German lawyer , chancellery advisor and mayor of the city of Itzehoe .

Life

Gustav Poel was born on November 17, 1804 as the ninth child of the private scholar and diplomat Piter Poel and Mrs. Friederike in Altona. After private tuition, he attended the Christianeum academic high school in Altona, and then devoted himself to studying law in Göttingen . In Berlin and Kiel he continued his studies, which he completed in 1826 with the official examination in Kiel (2nd character "with distinction"). He got a job as a lower court attorney in Altona and entered the administrative service.

From December 1827 to 1835 Poel worked as a chancellery in the Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburg chancellery in Copenhagen . Here he was an employee of Uwe Jens Lornsen , with whom he remained in contact when he was serving his one-year arrest in Friedrichsort and Rendsburg in 1831/32 .

According to the decree of King Friedrich VI. From May 12, 1835, Gustav Poel became police master on July 6, 1835, second councilor, city secretary and auctioneer in Itzehoe. Qualification as a fully qualified lawyer was a prerequisite for the office of police officer in the entire Danish state .

On May 24, 1848 he was appointed civil commissioner for Schleswig by the provisional government in Rendsburg to the commander-in-chief of the German federal troops , Lieutenant General Friedrich von Wrangel . He held this office until August 1848. His dismissal as police chief took place on June 1, 1849

On December 11, 1852, Poel was appointed mayor of Itzehoe. On the occasion of the visit of the Austrian governor in Holstein, Lieutenant Field Marshal Freiherr von Gablenz , on November 14, 1865 in Itzehoe, Poel was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order . On June 1, 1868, Poel was retired, but continued to conduct official business until July 8, 1868. On July 9, 1868, he was honored as the first honorary citizen of the city of Itzehoe.

In 1879 Gustav Poel moved to Trenthorst and devoted himself to his writing activities there.

Gustav Poel was married since 1837 with the former Konventualin the ladies pin Monastery Itzehoe Sophie Friederike Mathilde Wulf Hilde von Rumohr at Trenthorst and Wulmenau (born October 13, 1806 on Trenthorst, died there in 1894). He had seven children with her, including Wolfgang Poel .
