Remnants of the Prince's Tower

The Prinzessturm was a gun tower in the Zwingermauer of medieval Munich .

location

Isartor (left) with Lueg ins Land and Prinzessturm (right)

The Prinzessturm was about 100 m north of the Isartor at the point where the Zwingermauer, coming from the Isartor, turned to the west. It was located in front of the Lueg watchtower , which stood at this point on the inside of the kennel in the second city wall .

The foundations of the Prinzessturm and the remains of the Zwingermauer can be seen today in an inner courtyard at Thomas-Wimmer-Ring 1. They border on the back of the Vindelikerhaus at Marienstraße 21.

history

The Prinzessturm 1890

The Prinzessturm was mentioned in 1473 and 1490 as the Scheibling Tower (schaiblingen thurn bej den Ysertorn) , which is a type designation for round towers. Since the 19th century it has been called the Prinzessturm without any specific historical reference. In the literature it is often referred to only as Scheibling , which can lead to confusion with the Scheibling at the Schiffertor .

The tower was demolished in 1892. In 1987/88 the foundations of the Prinzessturm were exposed during construction work, and since then they have been clearly visible along with part of the adjoining Zwinger wall.
