War and domain chambers, also known as “chamber departments”, were the names of the provincial authorities in Prussia that Friedrich Wilhelm I had created when the administration was reorganized in 1723. They were the predecessors of the Prussian administrative districts and their governments established in 1815 .

Origin and tasks

They emerged from the amalgamation of the war commissariats with the official chambers, which Karl Heinrich zu Waldburg first established in Königsberg i. Pr. For the Kingdom of Prussia.

  • War commissariats were authorities that had to collect the taxes and duties that were intended for the needs of the army, for the standing army.
  • Official chambers administered the domains and collected the leases for these state goods.

The war and domain chambers were under the direction of the General-Oberfinanz-, War- und Domänendirektorium ( General Directory ) in Berlin, in which Friedrich von Görne played the decisive role. These offices existed until the great Prussian reforms by Heinrich Friedrich Karl Freiherr vom Stein and Karl August von Hardenberg in 1808, when they were given the title "Governments".
