The Fuldatalbrücke Kragenhof from 1855 , also known as the Kragenhofbrücke , is a listed railway bridge that crosses the Fulda at Gut Kragenhof on the state border between Hesse and Lower Saxony . It should not be confused with the neighboring Fuldatalbrücke Kragenhof , a railway overpass structure on the high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg . The Kragenhof Bridge was completed in 1855 as a stone arch bridge as part of the Hanover Southern Railway . The bridge, which was blown up towards the end of World War II , was restored in 1949.

The construction of the 167 meter long, 30 meter high and nine meter wide sandstone bridge lasted from 1852 to 1855. The bridge had five round arches with a clear width of 21 meters each. Two train tracks ran over it. The building had architectural elements typical of the period, such as archivolts in the vaulted arches , bridge eyes on the pillars and a balustrade with parapet pillars , a round arch frieze with a profiled cornice. It is not known whether the planned tower-like structures in the area of ​​the bridge abutments were implemented.

The landscape-defining bridge was one of the most important engineering structures in what was then the Kingdom of Hanover . It was the largest massive railway bridge of the Hanoverian Railways in front of the Werratalbrücke Münden, 14 km northeast .

Towards the end of World War II, German troops blew up the Fulda Valley Bridge in April 1945 to prevent the advance of US troops. In August 1945, US troops built a temporary steel bridge on the remains of the pillar of the old structure, which was in operation until 1947. From 1947 to 1949 the bridge was restored using the bridge abutments. A standardized truss bridge of the type Schaper-Krupp-Reichsbahnbrücke was installed as a permanent temporary measure. Two bridge piers made of reinforced concrete with sandstone facing serve as support. The bridge was rebuilt with two tracks, but only 27 meters high. In 1991 the bridge was placed under protection as a monument .
