history
The village was first mentioned in a document in 850. The current place name may derive, at least according to the legend, from Heeresstelle in the sense of an army camp .
In a major fire in the village in 1687, the "Kelterburg" and 60 houses were destroyed.
In 1894 the first large carbon dioxide source was drilled in Herste. The "giant fountain" formed an essential basis for the economic boom of the place. The entrepreneur Carl Gustav Rommenhöller acted as the “founder of the carbon dioxide industry” in Herste .
The St. Urbanus Church was built in 1907 and 1908.
One year after the death of Carl Gustav Rommenhöller, the Rommenhöller memorial on the southern outskirts was inaugurated in 1932 .
On January 1, 1970, the municipality of Herste was incorporated into the city of Bad Driburg together with other places of the Driburg office in accordance with the law on the reorganization of the Höxter district.
The city of Bad Driburg's large sewage treatment plant has been located northeast of the center of Herster between the Aa and the railway line since 1979 . The Herste primary school was closed in 1997.
politics
The chairman of the Herste district committee is Antonius Oeynhausen from the CDU.
A friendship between the cities that arose from contacts between the sports clubs has existed since 1973 between Bad Driburg-Herste and Gillingham in Dorset , England.
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Herste is on federal road 64 ( Telgte - Paderborn - Bad Driburg - Brakel - Höxter - Holzminden - Seesen ). The section of the B 64 leading along the southern edge of the village was opened to traffic in 1995 as a bypass road ; previously the inter-regional connecting road ran right through the village.
The regional bus company BahnBus Hochstift (BBH) in the local transport network Paderborn-Höxter (NPH) connects Herste with Bad Driburg and Brakel, from where you can continue your journey with other bus lines or the train.
The Altenbeken – Kreiensen (“Eggebahn”) railway runs on the northern edge of the village . Since the closure of the Herste train station in the early 1980s, rail travel has only been possible from the nearby Bad Driburg or Brakel train stations.

A large industrial and commercial area is located northwest of the center of Herster . In this u. a. the two traditional companies, mainly active in the glass trade, glaskoch (“ Leonardo ” brand ) and Ritzenhoff & Breker (“R&B”) are based. The headquarters of the logistics company Arens Spedition , which has a total of over 200 employees at four locations, is also located in Herste .
The large carbonic acid deposits occurring in the Herster area were formerly extracted and bottled by the "Rommenhöllerwerk" of CG Rommenhöller AG . Today, Herster production is owned by Linde AG (Linde Gas division).
Culture and sights
The St. Urbanus Church , the Rommenhöller monument (for Carl Gustav Rommenhöller ), some old half-timbered houses and a shrine to Mary are of cultural and historical importance .
